Founded in San Francisco in 1902, the LightHouse’s purpose is to promote the independence, equality and self-reliance of people who are blind or visually impaired. The LightHouse is currently in a period of growth, increasing our capacity to serve more low-vision and blind clients.

OVERVIEW:

The Volunteer Manager is a key, full-time staff position at LightHouse for the Blind and Visually Impaired (LightHouse) in San Francisco. LightHouse has over 200 volunteers annually, including meeting with the LightHouse community one-on-one, at LightHouse events, and at Enchanted Hills Camp. This position manages the entirety of the volunteer portfolio from recruitment to onboarding to placement.

  • Detail-oriented and strong computer skills
  • Ability to work both collaboratively and independently
  • Dedication to promoting an anti-ableist work culture and modelling anti-ableism practices to LightHouse volunteers
  • Dedication to volunteering by giving time formal or informally in the community
  • A bachelor’s degree or comparable work experience
  • At least two years in volunteer and/or program management

JOB ACCOUNTABILITIES:

Management and Coordination of Individual Volunteers 

  • Oversee the Recruitment and onboarding of new volunteers, which is the primary role of the Volunteer Coordinator
  • Management of the volunteer experience
    • Regular communication and timely communication with volunteers about volunteer opportunities
    • Placement of volunteers with opportunities and connecting them to staff or students as appropriate
    • Coordination with volunteers if they have any requirements, eg university practicum students, high school community service requirements, etc.
    • Coaching, disciplining, and dismissing as necessary
    • Coordination of volunteer’s offboarding
    • Develop and implement volunteer recognition initiatives, including, but not limited to, the annual Volunteer Appreciation Party and volunteer milestone awards
  • Directly manage the AmeriCorps Volunteer Infrastructure Project (VIP) member
  • Volunteer Recruitment
    • Develop and implement volunteer recruitment plan with key geographic regions of the East Bay, North Bay, and North Coast (Humboldt and Del Norte Counties). Collaboration with LightHouse departments like Communications, Development, and direct service staff in this plan.
    • Internal recruitment of LightHouse students for volunteer roles and opportunities, for both LightHouse and Enchanted Hills Camp volunteers
  • Volunteer Onboarding- Facilitation of the LightHouse volunteer orientation, occurring bi-monthly
  • Direct Service Management – Management of the Personal Service Volunteers and Fitness Partner Program
    • Communicate with students, support providers, and family members about how volunteers can support students. Timely responses to the student and LightHouse staff referrals to Volunteer Services.
    • Match LightHouse volunteer(s) with students and provide support to those matches
    • Problem solve with student and/or volunteer(s) as needed, including conversations with the student, volunteer(s), LightHouse staff, and student’s support network
  • Volunteer Infrastructure
    • Manage all aspects of the volunteer data management, kept in Salesforce
    • Maintain LightHouse’s volunteer policies, both independently and in collaboration with People and Culture, Risk Management, and other teams
  • Manage grants awarded to LightHouse for Volunteer Services
  • Manage LightHouse Departmental volunteers
    • Collaborate with other LightHouse Departments as a key member of the planning team for large events. This includes fundraising events like the LightHouse Gala and programs like White Cane Day
    • Manage internal Lighthouse departmental volunteer requests, this includes administrative volunteer tasks as well as volunteer support at programs and events
  • Enchanted Hills Camp (EHC)
    • Summer Session Volunteers
      • Partner with EHC program staff to ensure that all volunteers have completed the requirements for volunteering
      • Work with EHC staff in aligning American Camp Association best practices and accreditation requirements with LightHouse processes
    • Non-summer volunteers
      • Management and stewardship of group volunteers
      • Coordinate with EHC Facilities and Program staff in securing volunteer projects and dates
      • Day of management of volunteer groups with strong collaboration between EHC Facilities and Hospitality Teams
      • Manage, in collaboration with EHC Facilities and Program staff, the relationship and application of the AmeriCorps National Civic Conservation Corps (NCCC) Teams

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORKPLACE CONDITIONS

  • Evenings and weekends will be required, with advance scheduling and adjusted work schedules
  • Ability to sit at a desk and perform computer-intensive work for long periods of time; operate standard office equipment; ability to work at offsite location(s) independently as needed. Some work outdoors will be required.
  • Ability to travel independently throughout the Greater Bay Area
