After nearly a year of sharing her qi gong practice with the LightHouse community here at our flagship headquarters on Market St. in San Francisco, Dale is taking her knowledge and passion for the well-being that qi gong offers to our community in the East Bay at the Ed Roberts Campus. Keep reading to learn more about qi gong, or for more information, contact Adult Program Coordinator Serena Olsen at solsen@lighthouse-sf.org or 415-694-7316.

What is Qi Gong? Think of Qi Gong as a “moving meditation” addressing the “whole” for stress reduction & self-care, which benefits both physical and emotional health, and includes the physical, mental and spiritual aspects of a person, as well as the person’s integration in the world they live in. Qigong is not exercise -- it is dynamic meditation where doing repetitions is not the focus. The conscious application of the three intentful corrections: lengthen the spine, deepen the breath, clear the mind or visualize healing, which can be done sitting, lying down, standing or moving. Join our instructor Dale Mirmow (Ren Xue of the Americas, Level 2 Yuan Gong Training Level) weekly in this dynamic form of moving meditation and discover the health benefits that await you.

    Select the Right Tech

    May 8

If you’re blind or visually impaired, finding the right piece of access technology can be a big, and sometimes daunting, undertaking, but knowing what options can meet your needs is the first step.

Back by popular demand, here’s a chance to see first hand the latest and greatest in access technology. We’ve invited a variety of access technology vendors to come show you magnification, Braille displays, hand held devices, apps, and more. You can browse the vendor tables, compare devices, and ask questions.

While you’re here, chat with a LightHouse technology specialist to get tips on selecting the right technology to meet your individual needs, and learn how you can receive training on your access technology here at the LightHouse.

For questions, or to RSVP, contact Shen Kuan, skuan@lighthouse-sf.org or (415) 694-7312. Invite your friends and bookmark the event on Facebook.

*LightHouse offers space for vendors to show their products to the blind community, but vendor participation in this event does not imply Lighthouse endorsement.*

    Blind Arduino Workshop

    Blind Arduino Workshop

    May 12

Targeted toward introducing blind and low vision people to Arduino, participants will learn the basics of using Arduino hardware and software non visually, electronics basics, and come away with a kit of accessible supplies and measuring tools so you can start your own projects! This workshop series is run as part of Josh Miele’s Blind Arduino Project.

Arduino is a hardware and software platform that allows people to build and customize objects with introductory knowledge of electronics and coding. Popular uses of Arduino can be found in DIY smart home devices such as thermostats that adjust temperature according to the time of day, or lights that turn on and off automatically depending on the light levels outside. Arduino offers possibilities for blind and visually impaired people to customize smart home devices that might otherwise be inaccessible, and to make accessible measuring tools for completing DIY projects more independently.

    •      Where: San Francisco Lighthouse, 1155 Market St. 10th Floor, San Francisco, CA 94103

Participation in both workshops is not required.  However, participation in only the second workshop requires introductory knowledge of Arduino hardware and software.

Donations accepted; participation is free. However, everyone will receive $100 in supplies. Please donate as you are able. If you already know how to use Arduino, contact us via the registration form to learn how you can volunteer. This workshop series is part of a research project. Participants will have the opportunity to opt in to the study but enrolling in the study is not required.

"Be Bold, Be an Explorer, Be a Maker" Maker Faire Youth Weekend

    (All day)
    May 18 May 20

At LightHouse, we value the importance of innovation and the accomplishments of blind makers. Hence, this May, we are excited to invite 25 youth (14 and older) who are blind or low vision to attend the Be Bold, Be an Explorer, Be a Maker weekend program occurring in collaboration with the Youth Employment Series (YES) May 18-20, 2018 workshop!

The LightHouse Be Bold, Be an Explorer, Be a Maker workshop will be a packed weekend of hands-on experience for blind and low vision youth interested in the maker movement. The weekend will include a daylong trip to the Maker Faire in San Mateo guided by Oracle volunteers, opportunities to connect with blind makers, as well as an immersive weekend filled with hands-on activities and projects. We appreciate a generous grant from Oracle enabling us to offer full scholarships to cover fees for a limited number of participants who are currently not signed-up with DOR, so register early and do not miss out on this incredible experience! The deadline to register is May 11, 2018.

Maker Faire Is a celebration of the Maker Movement, a showcase of invention, creativity and resourcefulness. The Bay Area’s Maker Faire is the largest Maker Faire in the nation, right in the heart of Silicon Valley in Northern California. Part science fair, part county fair, and part something entirely new, Maker Faire is a gathering of tech enthusiasts, crafters, educators, tinkerers, hobbyists, engineers, science clubs, authors, artists, students and commercial exhibitors. “Makers” come to Maker Faire to show and share what they have made and what they have learned.

Starting on Friday, May 18 a group of 25 enthusiastic students will stay at the LightHouse student residences where they can support each other as they explore the broad array of projects and potential career fields makers engage in throughout the weekend.

On Saturday, May 20 students will travel as a group to the Maker Faire for guided tours with Oracle volunteers. Volunteers will accompany students in pairs to describe the projects showcased at the various booths, and potentially visit booths of blind makers.

The exciting weekend will conclude on Sunday, May 20, where students will participate in tutorials, workshops and presentations with blind mentors who are makers themselves. They will offer hands-on demonstrations, exhibit their own work, and provide tailored guidance and consultation.

To reserve your spot for "Be Bold, Be an Explorer, Be a Maker" 2018, receive an application, and determine your eligibility for a scholarship, please contact Ann Wai-Yee Kwong, Transition Program Specialist, by email at youth@lighthouse-sf.org or by phone at 415-694-7328.

A Registered Yoga Teacher (RYT), Registered Dietetic Technician (DTR), Certified Health Education Specialist (*CHES), former competitive Power Lifter, and so extensively pedigreed and certified that she has more alphabet soup behind her name than in her bowl, made with whole grains and fresh veggies, of course. If she can dead lift 275 lbs., she can definitely lift your spirits, and maybe she can explain what a High Flying Whale is. To RSVP, contact Adult Program Coordinator Serena Olsen at solsen@lighthouse-sf.org or 415-694-7316.

    Knitting

    Knitting

    May 24

Every week, our knitters gather to share their purls of wisdom and get in the loop on each other’s latest project, and usually end up in stitches spinning yarns. Whether you knit for pleasure, distraction or just practical economics, or you’ve never done it before and want to give it a try, there’s always room for another loom. Learn, refine, or teach a skill that makes your gift-giving budget lighter weight or support a student-led altruistic project like knitting chemo caps, beanies for babies, lap blankets or other creative applications.

For more info, needle Adult Program Coordinator Serena Olsen at solsen@lighthouse-sf.org or 415-694-7316.

Safe Streets – Third Crossing at 8th/Market

Safe Streets – Third Crossing at 8th/Market

    May 30

Our third and final intersection crossing for Safe Streets is at 8th and Market, near LightHouse. Safe Streets is part of the Vision Zero initiative, which aims to lower the number of pedestrian-related deaths within San Francisco to zero. A few staff members and ten mobility ambassadors, all of whom are blind/low vision cane users, will be crossing this intersection for about an hour to create visibility and awareness of blind/low vision pedestrians to the many sighted pedestrians, drivers, and cyclists that come by there. You are welcome to join us!

The events for the upcoming week are read aloud on our event hotline every Friday, which can be accessed by calling 415-694-7325. For more information about visiting the Adaptations Store, head to our shop page.

The LightHouse is scent-free. Please abstain from wearing colognes, perfumes, or other scented products. Additionally, coffee must be securely lidded at all times and citrus should not be peeled on the premises. Thanks for supporting our efforts to respect chemical sensitivities!
