Employment Programs at LightHouse for the Blind and Visually Impaired

Keep Your Career.

If you have a job you love, and your vision changes, don’t quit. We can coach you through making the adaptations you need and explaining your situation to your colleagues.

Know Your Strengths.

Adapting to low vision is, like anything else, a skill set. If you’ve already acquired these skills, you have already proven you’re a dedicated learner and can succeed in the workplace. If you don’t have these skills yet, LightHouse can teach you.

Disclose and Adapt.

Our employment experts in both our retention coaching and employment immersion program can not only help you through the steps to explain, embrace and celebrate your adaptations in the workplace, but they can also introduce you to the LightHouse’s many resources and offerings that can get you any new skills you may need.

One-on-one Coaching

If you have a job you love, and your vision changes, don’t quit. We can coach you through making the adaptations you need and explaining your situation to your colleagues. In addition to retention coaching, we also offer more immersive employment classes for those needing more preparation.

Immersion Training.

In the blindness community, we know that one size does not fit all, and this is reflected in the curriculum of our multi-week immersive employment program for those who are new to adapting theri job search. With a combination of short lectures, interactive activities, expert speakers and free-form conversations, each blind or low vision student has an opportunity to explore their interests, aptitudes, and think outside the box about which part of the job market piques their interest.

In addition to these discussions, students are coached in creating resumes and cover letters, using online job search tools, as well as real-life practice interviewing and disclosing a disability.
