1:00 pm: Guest Speaker Series: Frank Welte, What is MADlab?

Apr 9

While the name may conjure images of burbling beakers and mad scientists in lab coats cackling maniacally at their latest creation, the LightHouse MADlab is something altogether entirely different.  So what is it? The Media and Accessible Design Laboratory (MADlab) makes a wide variety of material accessible to people who are blind or visually impaired. Producing materials in braille, large print, and audio formats, they also specialize in tactile graphic design and production with an emphasis on tactile maps. Accessible Media Specialist Frank Welte will join us to share a day in the life of the MADlab and get down to just exactly what kinds of genius they are generating. To RSVP, contact Adult Program Coordinator Serena Olsen at solsen@lighthouse-sf.org or 415-694-7316.

Apr 25

Our first intersection crossing for Safe Streets is at 16th and Valencia, near the BART station. Safe Streets is part of the Vision Zero initiative, which aims to lower the number of pedestrian-related deaths within San Francisco to zero. A few staff members and ten mobility ambassadors, all of whom are blind/low vision cane users, will be crossing this intersection for about an hour to create visibility and awareness of blind/low vision pedestrians to the many sighted pedestrians, drivers, and cyclists that come by there. You are welcome to join us!
