9:00 am: Adapting Comics for Blind and Low Vision Readers

Aug 12

Adapting Comics for Blind and Low Vision Readers

Presented by: San Francisco State University's Comic Studies Department, The Program for Vision Impairments, and the Longmore Institute on Disability

Sponsored by: Amazon

Comics are currently a dominant force in popular culture, while simultaneously being increasingly recognized as a significant means for supporting literacy and a valuable tool for education in the classroom. Stories told in their pages often promote diversity and chronicle the lives of the marginalized, and yet the form itself completely leaves out the blind and low vision audience. With the mass popularity of comics, the industry is in dire need to find ways and set standards to create better access to comics for blind and low vision readers.

Join us for a one-day, free, virtual public international symposium on August 12 to explore the many tactics for developing greater access in comics, from audio description to tactile- and haptic-based emerging technologies. The voices of blind experts will be central, supporting the disability rights slogan of “Nothing About Us Without Us,” in dialogue with comic artists and access innovators with and without vision impairments.

ASL interpretation, Live CART  and audio description will be provided.

Schedule (all times in Pacific)

9:00 am to 9:30 am:  Welcome and Keynote
9:30 am to 10:45 am: Panel 1, Audio Approaches to Accessible Comics
11:00 am to 12:15 pm: Panel 2, Tactile Approaches (2.5D and 3D) to Accessible Comics
12:15pm to 1:00 pm: Lunch
1:00 pm to 2:15 pm: Panel 3, Emerging Technologies: Haptics and Screen-Based Approaches
2:30 pm  to 3:45 pm: Panel 4, Depictions of Blindness in Comics
3:45 pm to 4:15 pm: Keynote and Closing

1:00 pm: Harry Potter Club

Sep 4

Grab your wands, cauldrons, and your Harry Potter knowledge and join your Lighthouse friends for our new student driven Harry Potter Club. This monthly gathering of happy Harry Potter enthusiasts will gather during the afternoon of the first Saturday of each month for all sorts of Harry Potter awesomeness.

In January we will start the club off right with a kick-off party!  Where we will learn more about our Harry Potter friends by taking part in some house sorting and house competitions. Followed by a presentation from our friends at the Talking Books and Braille Center at the San Francisco Public Library about one way you might be able to access the Harry Potter book series. In February we will start watching the Harry Potter movie series and compare each of the movies and books in order. We will continue in this fashion with another installment of the Harry Potter series each month with a short break for summer. To best prepare for each month’s program we ask that you read the corresponding book before we watch the movie.

Don’t have the book?  Don’t worry! There are options. First is the NLS free braille and talking book library service. If you are not signed up with the NLS please start the process at https://www.loc.gov/programs/national-library-service-for-the-blind-and-print-disabled/about-this-service/?cid=loc-ppc_s=google_c=talking-book-library_ag=talking-book_kw=library-of-congress-talking-books.You may also subscribe to Learning Ally, who has audio versions of all the Harry Potter books.
