To celebrate our 60th anniversary, The Smith-Kettlewell Eye Research Institute is hosting a hybrid conference on Functional Vision and Accessibility, a 2-day international workshop on translational research to address visual impairment and accessibility. The conference will bring together stakeholders (those experiencing vision loss and blindness) and those doing translational research (scientists, clinicians, and inventors) to address long-standing and emerging vision problems with promising new approaches. Currently we have a limited number of travel grants for trainees and members of underrepresented groups to attend. We are waiting to find out whether we get funding for more travel grants.

Aug 4The San Francisco Public Library Talking Books and Braille Center (TBBC) and LightHouse are excited to announce our upcoming workshop, an Introduction to the National Library Service (NLS) eReader. The workshop provides a basic orientation to the eReader, starting with getting familiar with the layout of the device and basic functionality of the thumb keys. We will cover how to read a Braille book from an NLS cartridge and the various navigation options available in the eReader’s Book Reader. Workshop attendees will be able to receive additional one-on-one training with members of TBBC and LightHouse staff.
This workshop will be held in person at the LightHouse headquarters at 1155 Market St, 10th floor. The work is open to both LightHouse students and TBBC patrons.

Aug 7Vision is a peer-led drop-in support group that runs on a 12-week cycle of topics based on Hannah Fairbairn’s 2019 book, “When You Can't Believe Your Eyes: Vision Loss and Personal Recovery”. Every first and third Monday of the month, we meet to discuss different topics and share our experiences, thoughts, and knowledge. We are people with similar experiences who genuinely want to support one another in all aspects of living independently with our changing vision. Reading is not required. Aug 19Since April, Lighthouse has offered a semimonthly virtual writing workshop series. Each month a blind author would cover a different genre. Genres included poetry, personal essay/op ed, journalism and fiction. Each author provided writing tips as well as tips of the trade including how to submit your work, how to pitch ideas to editors, and what it takes to have a writing career. In the final two classes of this workshop, the four authors will return to discuss professionalism.
Join authors Stephen Kuusisto, Andrew Leland, James Tate Hill and M. Leona Godin and other aspiring LightHouse writers for the final two classes.
This virtual writing workshop series will help you grow confident in several genres: poetry, personal essay/op ed, journalism, and fiction. It will also address professionalism including: how to submit your work, how to pitch ideas to editors, and what it takes to have a writing career. Each month a visiting author will give students an overview of the genre, give an assignment for the following week, and provide spoken feedback on a portion of the work as well as suggestions for next steps.

About the Gala
The Gala will raise funds to support our mission to build Enchanted Hills Camp (EHC) back like never before, after the 2017 Napa Valley wildfires burned over half our buildings. But we need your help. Let’s all join together on August 19 and raise our paddles to support EHC. Come join our amazing community and lend your hand in our re-building efforts. Together we will call the new EHC our own.

Aug 21Vision is a peer-led drop-in support group that runs on a 12-week cycle of topics based on Hannah Fairbairn’s 2019 book, “When You Can't Believe Your Eyes: Vision Loss and Personal Recovery”. Every first and third Monday of the month, we meet to discuss different topics and share our experiences, thoughts, and knowledge. We are people with similar experiences who genuinely want to support one another in all aspects of living independently with our changing vision. Reading is not required.
