We'll cover setup and configuration of smart speakers featuring Alexa, Siri and Google Assistant and share some ways all three virtual assistants can help you get things done. Learn the ins and outs of GPS terminology, Microsoft Soundscape, Apple Maps, Google Maps, and transit apps. The class will be limited to eight students. Students interested in the course must live in one of the following counties: San Francisco, San Mateo, Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin or Humboldt to qualify. Students must use an iPhone, have a Apple account and be able to download apps to their iPhone, and be comfortable navigating the screen semi-independently. Class Schedule September 8: GPS Concepts and Terminology In this class, we will learn the basic terminology of digital wayfinding such as POI and turn-by turn. We'll also use virtual assistants and the Compass app to obtain basic location and directional information. September 15: Soundscape Part 1: Automatic Callouts and Markers In this class, we will review the functions of automatic call-out applications and start to explore Soundscape's informational controls, in order to obtain information about immediate physical surroundings as well as create markers for points of interests (POIs). September 22: Soundscape Part 2: Audio Beacons and Street Preview Mode In this class, we will continue to use the various features and functions within Soundscape to travel virtually to new locations for route-planning purposes, and we will compare/contrast Soundscape with other automatic call-out applications. September 27: Getting Directions with Apple Maps and Google Maps In this class, we will review Apple Maps and Google Maps' features and functions to obtain information for local businesses and search for public transit directions to points of interests as well as for walking directions to points of interests. September 29: Transit Applications and Review In this last class, we will explore and use the Moovit and Transit applications to look for departure time information for nearby stops and lines and to search for directions to a point of interest. We'll also review the applications discussed during the course to mark, obtain directions for, and virtually travel to points of interests. 8:00 pm: Reel Escape Audio Description Club: Daredevils (online)8:00 pm: Reel Escape Audio Description Club: Daredevils (online) – We all need an escape sometimes, and with the Real Escape Audio Description Club, you can do just that with your blind and low vision friends. With the success of the first two seasons of Daredevil, we decided to continue the Marvel series into the fall semester with season three. Starting on Friday, September 9, teens, and young adults will gather to watch the Netflix series, Daredevil – a TV series about a blind attorney by day and vigilante by night. Our weekly gathering will start at 8:00 PM Friday evenings, leaving plenty of time to watch that week’s episode and connect with your EHC and LightHouse friends. Parents Please Note: the Daredevil TV Series has adult content and is rated TV-MA and contains the following: crude indecent language (L), explicit sexual activity (S), and graphic violence (V). A more detailed parental guide can be found at here. If any youth under the age of 18 wish to join this series, they must have a parent or guardian contact a LightHouse youth team member with written permission for their child to participate. 6:30 pm: LightHouse plays Goalball! (in-person)6:30 pm: LightHouse plays Goalball! (in-person) – BORP Goalball practice is a fun way to get exercise and meet new people. The goalball practice is designed for all ages and experience levels and is free of charge. If you do not have your own Goalball equipment, we can provide you with elbow pads, knee pads, as well as eye shades. A shuttle out of Lighthouse San Francisco will be available but will be limited and on a first come basis. Whether you enjoy meditative movement, breath work and yoga or have a flair for dances from Bollywood o ballroom, bring your heart and style to this class and share your love in motion with your community. This open-ended dance class celebrates you as the expert on your body, inviting you to dance from a chair or take over the floor. We warm up with intention, explore improvisation techniques, try on each other's movement styles and even perform for each other. Test your sense of spatial awareness, increase your flexibility and build confidence in the wonder that is you.

With each gathering having time dedicated to updating others about their projects, learn a little about that month’s mentor, and most importantly to have time to hang out and polish with your blind and low-vision friends. Students that sign up for the program will receive the basic materials and equipment to get started with wood polishing. Those students that remain active in the program and improve their skills will become eligible for additional raw materials that they can turn into art or gifts for loved ones. 1:00 pm: Family Pumpkin Palooza (in-person)1:00 pm: Family Pumpkin Palooza (in-person) – 2022 LightHouse Family Pumpkin Palooza With Halloween just around the corner and an abundance of everything pumpkin everywhere, it’s time to gather and embrace the season with other LightHouse families. Whether the family member that is blind or low vision is a parent or a child, we would like to invite you and your family to our next Family Pumpkin Palooza. Our Halloween theme festival hosted by the LightHouse Community Services team and Living Skills instructors are scheduled for the afternoon of October 29 at our headquarters in San Francisco. We will have pumpkins and lots of fun. The fun will begin with pumpkin carving for all with some helping hands from our Living Skills team for those that may need some help developing these carving skills. In addition to practicing your carving skills we will have you all showing off your artistic and culinary skills with our pumpkin cupcake decorating and tasting challenge. All followed by a costume contest including categories for most elaborate costume, most creative costume and possibly a best family themed costume.

The products demonstrated will be the OrCam MyEye 2 and the OrCam Read, both of which are access technology devices which access print using text-to-speech and Voice Assistant technology. OrCam MyEye 2This is a wearable device that attaches to glasses. It’s activated by pointing gestures or by following the wearer’s gaze and reads printed and digital text aloud. It also helps with navigation and object recognition. It includes interactive reading, which allows the wearer to do a voice search for specific text or assist with identification of objects. The group is appropriate for both beginners and advanced practitioners and instruction is provided in all aspects of the practice. Instructor Jeffrey Schneider has more than 40 years of meditation and teaching experience. It is a virtual class using the Zoom platform—everyone is welcome as little or often as they like. Hear what others share as well. These mid-week sessions can help you feel more positive emotions, relish good experiences, improve your health, deal with adversity and build strong relationships. Previous sessions included demonstrations of poetry, music, drumming, visualization, Chinese and Japanese calligraphy, self-care, and forgiveness. These are followed by individual check-ins. 6:30 pm: Goalball with BORP (in-person)6:30 pm: Goalball with BORP (in-person) – Bay Area Outreach Recreational Programs is once again hosting BORP Goalball Practice every Wednesday from 6:30 pm to 9:00 pm. The gym is located at 2100 Browning St. Berkeley. Practice is open to all, no experience necessary. Whether you’re a goalball pro or new to the game, you now have the chance to get exercise and meet new people. Created in 1946 as a way to help blind and low vision veterans rehabilitate, participants compete in teams of three, and try to throw a ball that has bells embedded in it into the opponents' goal. If anyone playing the game has some level of vision, they wear a blindfold. The practice is designed for all ages and experience levels and is free of charge. If you do not have your own goalball equipment, you’ll be provided with elbow pads, knee pads, and eyeshades.

Enjoy fun activities with your little one, ages 0-6, while learning strategies to support your child's visual, sensory, motor and concept development. Connect with other families who understand and share your experience raising a child who is blind, has low vision, or Cortical Visual Impairment (CVI). Weekly activities are designed to be accessible for all, and to build upon monthly themes that you can integrate into your family routines. All are welcome!
