At LightHouse, we value the importance of innovation and the accomplishments of blind makers. Hence, this May, we are excited to invite 20 youth (14 and older) who are blind or low vision to attend the Be Bold, Be an Explorer, Be a Maker weekend program occurring in collaboration with the Youth Employment Series (YES) May 17-19, 2019 workshop!
The LightHouse Be Bold, Be an Explorer, Be a Maker workshop will be a packed weekend of hands-on experience for blind and low vision youth interested in the maker movement. The weekend will include a guided daylong trip to the Maker Faire in San Mateo, opportunities to connect with blind makers, crafters, and artists, as well as an immersive weekend filled with hands-on activities and projects. We appreciate a generous grant from Oracle enabling us to offer full scholarships to cover fees for a limited number of participants who are currently not signed-up with DOR. So register early and do not miss out on this incredible experience! The deadline to register is May 10, 2019.
Maker Faire Is a celebration of the Maker Movement, a showcase of invention, creativity and resourcefulness. The Bay Area’s Maker Faire is the largest Maker Faire in the nation, right in the heart of Silicon Valley in Northern California. Part science fair, part county fair, and part something entirely new, Maker Faire is a gathering of tech enthusiasts, crafters, educators, tinkerers, hobbyists, engineers, science clubs, authors, artists, students and commercial exhibitors. “Makers” come to Maker Faire to show and share what they have made and what they have learned.
Starting on Friday, May 17, a group of 20 enthusiastic students will stay at the LightHouse student residences where they can support each other as they explore the broad array of projects and potential career fields makers engage in throughout the weekend.
On Saturday, May 18 students will travel as a group to the Maker Faire for guided tours with volunteers and blind/low vision mentors. Volunteers will accompany students in pairs to describe the projects showcased at the various booths, and potentially visit booths of blind makers.
The exciting weekend will conclude on Sunday, May 19, where students will participate in tutorials, workshops and presentations with blind mentors who are makers themselves. They will offer hands-on demonstrations, exhibit their own work, and provide tailored guidance and consultation.

Superfest Showcase at the Roxie Theater

Emmy Award-winning director Jason DaSilva continues the documentation of his diagnosis with multiple sclerosis and its aftermath. WHEN WE WALK, the follow-up to DaSilva’s 2013 film WHEN I WALK and part of a documentary trilogy, is bracingly forthright and political in this film about inequalities that parents with disabilities face.
His previous film documented the first seven years after his diagnosis and launched a platform for his AXS lab and map, which provide information about accessible locations worldwide. The new film tracks DaSilva’s daily struggles as the father of a young child in an environment where the healthcare system is stacked against him. As his health continues to deteriorate, DaSilva exposes the many inaccessible spaces and systems that able-bodied people take for granted.

Come join us for an exciting afternoon of community conversations when we dive deep into the intersectionality of LGBTQ+ and Disability! A panel discussion will kick off the event, followed by breakout sessions with more specific conversations. Breakout topics include:
- Coping with Microaggressions
- Coming Out: LGBTQ+ and Disabled
- Advocating for Your Sexual Health
This event is being co-hosted by the SF LGBT Center and LightHouse for the Blind and Visually Impaired. No matter what communities you are a part of, by attending this event we hope that you will learn, meet new people and have a fun afternoon! Light refreshments will be served.

Are you a young professional in the Bay Area impacted (or know someone who is) by low vision? We are a group of individuals affected by retinal degeneration diseases and we would love for you to come meet up to chat, share stories, network and discuss other events. We look forward to meeting you!
Our next meeting is scheduled for Saturday, May 18 from 3 - 5 p.m. We will be meeting at the LightHouse for the Blind and Visually Impaired at 1155 Market St 10th Floor, San Francisco, CA 94103 in the Conference Room (room 1040) on the 10th floor.

Our goal is to meet every other month. We are open to any "young professionals." Of course, that is fairly subjective, and as of now we just hope that those who want to attend are either "young" (Denny's qualifies those "55+" as "senior" so "young" means "those who cannot receive a Senior discount at Denny's") or a "professional" (anyone with a job and who is affected by an inherited retinal disease).
