Jul 11Every week, our knitters gather to share their purls of wisdom and get in the loop on each other’s latest project, and usually end up in stitches spinning yarns. Whether you knit for pleasure, distraction or just practical economics, or you’ve never done it before and want to give it a try, there’s always room for another loom. Learn, refine, or teach a skill that makes your gift-giving budget lighter weight or support a student-led altruistic project like knitting chemo caps, beanies for babies, lap blankets or other creative applications.

Coding and Game Development WeekendCoding and Game Development Weekend
(All day)
Jul 20 – Jul 21LightHouse for the Blind and Facebook are excited to partner for a weekend of coding and game development at the Enchanted Hills Summer Camp. Campers will have an opportunity to work side-by-side with Facebook software engineers over two days. Together, we will build a web-based choose-your-own-path game. Working in small groups, campers will design the narrative of their game and then code the paths through the narrative. They may embellish the game with mystery, riddles, useful objects and plot twists – whatever the imagination can conjure.
We ask that participants have experience using computers, the web, keyboarding skills, and any assistive technology used to access their computers, such as screen readers or magnification, and at least a familiarity with coding HTML web pages. For campers who want to explore more complex game interactions, the game platform will support interaction options enabled via custom JavaScript. The Facebook engineers will collaborate and help campers push the boundaries of their current coding skills. The campers will also learn to use the version control system Git, which is widely used in open source and professional code projects.
Where: Enchanted Hills Camp
When: Saturday, July 20 and Sunday, July 21 from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm both days
How: First complete the Teen Session Application at the EHC Teen Session website. Then email EHC Administrative Assistant Sydney Ji at sji@lighthouse-sf.org with a letter of recommendation from students TVI or Orientation and Mobility Specialist stating that the student meets the prerequisites for this exciting program opportunity. Please put Coding and Game Development Weekend in the Subject Line. -

Jul 29Guest Speaker Series: Claire Spector, Textile Artist
Monday, July 29, 1-2:00 p.m.Legally blind textile artist Claire Spector sews by feel. Her “Blind Stitching: Vis-AbilityTM” exhibition of contemporary textile art will be on display in the LightHouse Gallery on the first floor of our 1155 Market St. headquarters, June 8 through December 20, 2019.
The exhibition explores working in different ways and stepping out into a wider world after blindness through the medium of contemporary textile art. Claire finds following the tactile work of sewing to be meditative. Sharing art guided by touch opens dialogue and new opportunities to explore fresh possibilities in making tactile art. Claire joins us to share her own journey through the intersection of artistry and blindness. Please RSVP to Adult Program Coordinator Serena Olsen at solsen@lighthouse-sf.org or 415-694-7316.
The events for the upcoming week are read aloud on our event hotline every Friday, which can be accessed by calling 415-694-7325. For more information about visiting the Adaptations Store, head to our shop page.
The LightHouse is scent-free. Please abstain from wearing colognes, perfumes, or other scented products. Additionally, coffee must be securely lidded at all times and citrus should not be peeled on the premises. Thanks for supporting our efforts to respect chemical sensitivities!
