Why Choose LightHouse?

The LightHouse for the Blind and Visually Impaired in San Francisco is in its ninth year of providing Employment Services to blind and visually impaired people within the Bay Area. In that time, we have served over 240 Department of Rehabilitation Consumers abd we have consistently placed over 40% of our graduates in the competitive job market. Our expanded and growing staff means more frequent workshops. We are passionately dedicated to the job of securing gainful employment for all low vision and people people.

 

How does the Employment Immersion Program work at LightHouse?

We offer an innovative and groundbreaking way of including students both within the Bay Area and those living in other parts of California the same immersive experience.

 

How?

For the first 5 days of the program, all students attend virtually through the Zoom computer platform. Then, the next week, students travel in to LightHouse Headquarters in San Francisco to attend classes at our state-of-the-art facility. They overnight in fully equipped dormitories on-site. This program takes place the first two weeks of every month in 2020, except July. Classes take place Monday through Friday, during those two weeks, with no class on the weekend.

 

What Students Will Learn:

The curriculum content adheres to Certified DOR guidelines. Students receive a comprehensive workbook to augment classroom workshop in addition to a companion textbook comprised of worksheets and assignments.

 

Expectations of students:

  • attend all sessions
  • complete assignments in a timely manner
  • submit “Job Search activity” spreadsheets to Employment Specialist when participating in Job Development Phase

 

What will students do during the course?

Some of the activities students will do to enhance learning include:

  • Job Preparation Bootcamp! (25 workshop hours)
  • Job Preparation – The Power in Uniting (25 workshop hours)
  • Learn how to structure job seeking activities
  • Students will migrate to Jobs Group (both during virtual and local class sessions)

 

AUTHORIZATIONS

Intake $330.

Job Preparation $770.

Job Development $770 (only if student is placed)

Residence – 5 nights @ $175 per night (room and meals)

10:00 am: Hands on Workshop @ LightHouse East Bay: Spring Cleaning

In this month's Hands On Workshop, we will explore ideas and methods for organizing and sprucing up your surroundings this Spring. We will look at organization and labeling methods, and participants will create a DIY cleaning spray and labels to use at home or office.

The Hands On Series of workshops are designed to not only provide information, but to provide hands on experience completing tasks and mastering skills. At the end of each workshop you will walk away with at least one skill that you can begin using in your life immediately. Each workshop will have a theme within the umbrella of Independent Living Skills. Themes may include; note taking, house hold projects, DIY cleaning products, make-up, household/office organization, container gardening and meal prepping just to name a few! Workshops will occur the second Mondays and Tuesdays of each month. It is not necessary to attend both workshops. Students of all backgrounds and experience levels are welcome to attend. Space is limited.

Are you curious to learn more about guide dogs but don't know where to start? This workshop will cover how to decide if a guide dog is right for you, what skills you need before applying to schools, common misconceptions about guide dogs, how to pick a guide dog school, what to expect during the application process, and how to best prepare for school once you are accepted.
