This DeYoung Virtual Access Day is on the exhibit American Beauty: The Osher Collection of American Art currently on view at the DeYoung. Zoom information and registration links are below. Anchored by Impressionist and Realist artworks, this exhibition spans the years 1848 to 1960 and presents a variety of artistic responses to this complex period. This gift from Bernard and Barbro Osher enhances the museum’s American art collection with several significant firsts: the first large-scale oil painting by Winslow Homer (The Angler, ca. 1874), the first genre picture by William Merritt Chase (Spanish Bric-à-Brac Shop, 1883), the first major George Bellows landscape (In Virginia, 1908), the first Georgia O’Keeffe images of the Southwest (Front of Ranchos Church, 1930 and The Patio, 1940), plus thirteen artists entering the museum’s collection for the first time. The historic sweep of these paintings, drawings, and sculptures is reflected by several recurring themes, including the adventurous spirit of artists abroad, the enduring allure of Impressionism, intimacy and immediacy of portraiture, and beauty of America’s landscapes and seascapes. Connect with other families who understand and share your experience raising a child who is blind, has low vision, or Cortical Visual Impairment (CVI). Weekly activities are designed to be accessible for all, and to build upon monthly themes that you can integrate into your family routines. All are welcome! If necessary, these fun and engaging projects are adapted to offer a tactile or multi-sensory experience from start to finish. This month, MCD will bring projects from past exhibitions that may come back in the future by popular demand so we might offer thoughts and feedback about the projects. October features mask making. The art of creating masks offers both an opportunity to hide or reveal something about who you are. In this three-part series, we will form masks using plaster cast material on our own faces. During the second session, we will have the opportunity to paint and embellish them just in time for Halloween or for hanging on your wall. We will gather on our phones to hear what is happening in Marney’s garden, learn new techniques, and share our stories with each other. About Host: Marney Blair has been a farmer for 20 years at Fulcrum Farm. It was an integrated farm that included turkeys, laying hens, milking cows, and row crops of beans, corn, and edible seeds. 4:30 pm: Make, an After Hours Party at the Museum of Craft and Design (in-person) – Museum of Craft and Design MAKE the Museum of Craft and Design’s After-Hours Party, is an opportunity to creatively connect by exhibition-inspired art. The event is based on the Neon as Soulcraft exhibit. In response to feedback from MCD's newly established Disability Advisory Committee, the first hour, at 4:40, will feature a descriptive audio tour, selected activations, and haptic experiences of Neon as Soulcraft. The first hour is limited to 35 people, and pre-registration is encouraged. At 5:30, the event will include a greater number of drop-in activations. Come for the first hour of this special MAKE event and stay the whole evening to dive deeply into the creative processes, theories, and themes behind the exhibit. Archibald, globally in demand, creates a World Premiere in her first project with Smuin. Neenan, declared “one of the most appealing and singular choreographic voices in ballet today” by The New York Times, also makes his Smuin debut. Our new partners with GGBA will first take us around the Salesforce Transit Park as they identify by sound and describe in detail the birds that are residing there.
