Come to the EBC campus on Tuesdays for an all levels Ukulele class. The parts of the ukulele, strings, chords, are all taught through description and assistance. Volunteers, called chord callers, will verbally call out the cord ahead of time, as an accessible way of reading music. The class starts at a more beginner level allowing for everyone to play and warm up, and progresses to more challenging songs. Playing music has been known to develop dexterity, improve cognitive function, exercises the brain, enhances memory, and is simply FUN! Bring your voice and enthusiasm and join in the fun. Weekly activities are designed to be accessible for all, and to build upon monthly themes that you can integrate into your family routines. All are welcome! To make our upcoming White Cane Day event even more vibrant and fun, we’re putting together a small team of sign-makers! This is a great way to get creative, meet people, and show your support for the community. We’re looking for a group of volunteers to help make signs for this year’s march. No art skills required, just your creativity and enthusiasm. Most people really enjoy the process, and it’s a great way to show your support for the blind and low vision community. If you’d like to join in, reply to this message at sbolus@lighthouse-sf.org 6:30 pm: LightHouse Public Board Meeting – Members of the public are invited to attend the Thursday, October 2, 2025, meeting of the Board of Directors of San Francisco’s LightHouse for the Blind and Visually Impaired. This virtual meeting will be held via Zoom and will run from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Pacific. Please Note: The meeting will start at 5:30 with the executive session until 6:30. At that time, we will resume the public agenda, which will include time for public comment. RSVP’s & Public CommentThirty (30) minutes will be reserved for public comment. Members of the public will have up to three (3) minutes to comment. If you would like to attend the virtual meeting, please complete the following form. Oct 4(1 event) 10:00 am: White Cane Day Celebration – Our 3rd annual march across the Golden Gate Bridge will take place on Saturday, October 4. This is a free event, open to all ages and all who are interested. Bring your canes, your guide dog, and your sighted allies as we all come together to celebrate the BVI community! Participants can come to the EBC or LH locations for LightHouse shuttles, or meet us at the North Vista Point. Oct 7(2 events) 10:00 am: Speak Up Skills: Strategies for Independence, Advocacy, and Conversation for Blind and Low Vision Adults (online) – When: 1st and 3rd Tuesdays (October-December) from 10:00 AM-11:30 AM October 7 and 21, November 4 and 18, and December 2 and 16 RSVP: Speak Up RSVP Link or Email sbolus@lighthouse-sf.org Speak Up Skills is a six-week, peer-led support group designed for people adjusting to vision loss. Are you struggling to adapt to changes in your vision? Do you feel alone in navigating daily life with impaired vision? This group offers a supportive space to share experiences, insights, and strategies for living independently with changing vision. Following a cycle of topics from Hannah Fairbairn’s When You Can’t Believe Your Eyes: Vision Loss and Personal Recovery, we’ll practice communication skills such as self-advocacy, boundary setting, and speaking up in medical settings, social events, and at home. Sessions include discussion, peer sharing, and role-plays. Reading the book is not required, but it is available on BARD (DBC11619) for those who want to explore more deeply. Each person will get 3 cow pots. Each paper bag has three envelopes. Each envelope is labeled what seeds are inside. Inside the envelope is a plastic sandwich bag that holds the seeds. People should open one envelope at a time over a plate of something that can collect the small seeds. The squash envelope has 2 seeds; Chard envelope has 6 seeds and Lettuce envelope has 5 seeds.
