10:00 am: Blind Arduino Workshop10:00 am: Blind Arduino Workshop – Targeted toward introducing blind and low vision people to Arduino, participants will learn the basics of using Arduino hardware and software non visually, electronics basics, and come away with a kit of accessible supplies and measuring tools so you can start your own projects! This workshop series is run as part of Josh Miele’s Blind Arduino Project. Arduino is a hardware and software platform that allows people to build and customize objects with introductory knowledge of electronics and coding. Popular uses of Arduino can be found in DIY smart home devices such as thermostats that adjust temperature according to the time of day, or lights that turn on and off automatically depending on the light levels outside. Arduino offers possibilities for blind and visually impaired people to customize smart home devices that might otherwise be inaccessible, and to make accessible measuring tools for completing DIY projects more independently.
Participation in both workshops is not required. However, participation in only the second workshop requires introductory knowledge of Arduino hardware and software. Donations accepted; participation is free. However, everyone will receive $100 in supplies. Please donate as you are able. If you already know how to use Arduino, contact us via the registration form to learn how you can volunteer. This workshop series is part of a research project. Participants will have the opportunity to opt in to the study but enrolling in the study is not required. The Community Services Team would like to invite our LGBTQ+ community members, their families, friends and allies to celebrate the intersectionality of LGBTQ+ and blindness at our “Pride Happy Hour & LGBTQ+ Community Conversation” featuring a special panel discussion. Our conversations will center on LGBTQ+ heritage and intersectionality within our community. Get started with the 30% & Growing crew at 5 PM for a special Pride Happy Hour edition of 30% & Growing to mix and mingle before we dialogue and discuss. At 6:30 PM, join us for an engaging evening and discussion about what it means to live at the intersection of multiple marginalized identities. Individuals with multiple marginalized identities are among the most stigmatized and excluded in our society. The stigma faced by our community often leads to poor health and education outcomes, affecting chances for participation in society and further perpetuating violence, abuse, and exploitation. At the LightHouse we are committed to changing this reality and have several programs tackling some of the issues most prevalent in our community. This Community Conversation will bring together disabled LGBTQ+ community members and organizers who identify as blind or visually impaired to consider the current state of disability activism in LGBTQ+ communities. Topics of conversations will include: employment, health, housing, relationships, identity, and the unique needs of our community. A LightHouse Access Technology Trainer is available on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3 to 6 p.m. for FREE 1-1.25 hour slots of training and support in VoiceOver (for iOS), speech programs including NVDA and Jaws, Braille Displays, Victor Reader Stream, and assistance with downloading and using apps like KNFBReader and Be My Eyes. Our trainer can also assist you with downloading books from BARD, setting up a FaceBook profile or downloading music. Safe Streets is part of the Vision Zero initiative, which aims to lower the number of pedestrian-related deaths within San Francisco to zero. A few staff members and ten mobility ambassadors, all of whom are blind/low vision cane users, will be crossing this intersection for about an hour to create visibility and awareness of blind/low vision pedestrians to the many sighted pedestrians, drivers, and cyclists that come by there.
