Mar 3(1 event) 6:30 pm: Speak Up Skills: Strategies for Independence, Advocacy, and Conversation for Blind and Low Vision Adults (online) – Tuesdays in March, 6:30 – 8:00 PM, Online Event This six-week, peer-led group offers space to share experiences, insights, and strategies for living independently with changing vision. Each session includes interactive learning through lessons, group discussion, and role-play practice, following a cycle of topics from Hannah Fairbairn’s When You Can’t Believe Your Eyes: Vision Loss and Personal Recovery. Build communication skills such as self-advocacy, boundary setting, and speaking up in medical settings, social events, and at home. Beginners are guided through touch-based positioning and clear verbal descriptions. Chairs are available for seated postures, while dance bars along the wall provide stability for standing practice. Tai Chi can improve balance, flexibility, coordination, and focus; reduce stress; and support joint health and circulation. Where: 4539 Occidental Rd, Santa Rosa 12:00 pm: Living Well: A Monthly Discussion and Guest Speaker Forum (Hybrid) – Wednesday, March 4, 12:00 -1:30 PM, Hybrid Event We have a Guest Speaker Marcia Katz from Council on Ageing Santa Rosa, who will talk about the Senior Peer Support Counseling program available to seniors. March 5, we will share detailed description and discussion about EHC Camp sessions for this year 2026 and a complete look at the camp application and scholarship application. March 19 Guest Speaker Elaine Rocks- author of Barbara “Dusty” Roads. Her book tells the story of a trailblazing stewardess and union leader who challenged the airline industry’s sexist stewardess policies in the 1950s and ’60s. Fighting against marriage bans, age limits, weight restrictions, unequal pay, and humiliating girdle checks, she refused to back down. As one of the first female union lobbyists to Congress, she advocated for workplace equality and later made history by filing the first-ever Equal Employment Opportunity Commission discrimination complaint. Elaine will share personal details, and we will get to touch uniforms and personal items. This virtual meeting will be held via Zoom and will run from 5:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Pacific. Mar 6(2 events) 10:30 am: Blind Fencing (In Person) – Friday, March 6, 10:30 PM - 12:00 PM, In-person Event Join fencing coaches Brandon Smith and Stacey Breidenstein of SF Fencing Academy for an introduction to Blind Fencing, a sport taught to blind and low vision athletes since the 1950s. Learn core skills—stance, footwork, orientation, blade work, and basic tactics—through listening, touch, and guided movement in a fun, safe, supportive environment. Where: 1155 Market Street, San Francisco, CA, 10th Floor 1:00 pm: We Can Dance – Afro-Latin Dance (In-Person) – Friday, March 6,1:00 - 2:30 PM, In-person Event This inclusive, accessible Afro-Latin dance class introduces the fundamentals of Kizomba partner dance while supporting wellbeing, connection, and confidence. Led by instructor Vanessa Corpuz, the class uses clear verbal instruction, touch, and guided movement designed for blind and low-vision participants. Mar 7(1 event) 8:30 am: 2026 Northern California Regional Braille Challenge – 2026 Northern California Regional Braille Challenge Join us in person at the LightHouse for the Blind and Visually Impaired in San Francisco as we proudly host this year's Northern California Braille Challenge where we'll celebrate braille literacy, confidence, and community! Each year, blind and low-vision students, families, and educators from across Northern California come together to celebrate braille literacy at the Northern California Braille Challenge. Participants put their braille skills to the test through contests in reading comprehension, speed and accuracy, spelling, proofreading, and tactile graphics. Beyond the competition, the day offers workshops, resources, and meaningful opportunities for students and families to connect, learn, and be inspired. We are pleased to announce that LightHouse is once again partnering with AARP’s Tax-Aide Program to provide free tax filing support at 1155 Market Street this tax filing season. AARP will be at LightHouse HQ on Mondays and Thursdays from February 5 - April 5, 2026, with the addition of Wednesday appointments available in March. Mar 31(1 event) 6:30 pm: Speak Up Skills: Strategies for Independence, Advocacy, and Conversation for Blind and Low Vision Adults (online) – Tuesdays in March, 6:30 – 8:00 PM, Online Event This six-week, peer-led group offers space to share experiences, insights, and strategies for living independently with changing vision. Each session includes interactive learning through lessons, group discussion, and role-play practice, following a cycle of topics from Hannah Fairbairn’s When You Can’t Believe Your Eyes: Vision Loss and Personal Recovery. Build communication skills such as self-advocacy, boundary setting, and speaking up in medical settings, social events, and at home.
