Overview

The Low Vision Optometrist provides specialty low vision care to patients who have experienced vision loss, are under the care of a primary eye care professional, and who wish to improve the quality of their daily living through vision rehabilitation. Services include trial frame refraction, contrast sensitivity testing, evaluation of visual fields, prescribing and demonstrating low vision aids, recommending assistive technology, and referring to other specialty rehabilitation services as needed. The low vision optometrist will collaborate with a team of rehabilitation specialists to promote the independence and well-being of our blind and visually impaired patients.

Qualifications

  • Doctor of Optometry Degree.
  • Residency training preferred.
  • Maintain current California licensure as an Optometrist.
  • Provide own professional liability insurance, minimum coverage $1,000,000 per incident, $3,000,000 per aggregate.
  • At least 4 years thorough knowledge of optometry and ability to perform optometric examinations.
  • Will consider looking at less than 4 years’ experience, as well as recent graduates for a Jr position.
  • Experience working with low vision/blind patients strongly preferred.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Must be able to effectively communicate with patients, staff, and other providers.
  • Must comply with HIPAA regulations in all communications and handling of protected health information.
  • Active certification in CPR, AED, and First Aid.
  • Bilingual English/Spanish is a plus.

Job Responsibilities

  • Provide low vision evaluations including functional vision assessments, prescribing glasses and low vision aids, educating patients on available resources, and referring to rehabilitation services as needed.
    • Services will be on-site 3 days/week.
    • Make diagnostic referrals ​and coordinate care ​to ensure patients receive appropriate medical attention.
  • Collaborate with rehabilitation team including certified O&M specialists, service navigator, low vision occupational therapists, and assistive technology specialists to develop goal-oriented plan of care.
    • Review and sign Occupational Therapist’s plan of care.
  • Maintain thorough and accurate record of relevant patient history, rehabilitative goals, patient counseling, assessment and plan.
    • Integrate records into an electronic health records (EHR) system.
    • Review low vision questionnaire and ophthalmologic reports from referring providers prior to patient’s appointment.
    • Communicate with referring eye care providers with written reports.
    • Assist in the completion of paperwork as necessary (for example, applications for disabled parking placard, free audio books, etc.)
    • Timely completion of patient charts including documentation of ICD-10 diagnosis and CPT billing codes.
  • Keep current with new developments in the field of optometry, specifically low vision.
  • Uphold the highest standards of medical care and ethical guidelines.
    • Must comply with all organizational, state, and federal regulations pertaining to Optometry.
  • Willingness to perform other related duties as assigned.

Physical Requirements

  • Must be able to carry or transport 20 lbs.
  • Sit and or stand for periods of time.
  • Operate standard office equipment.
  • Full range of motion needed to conduct exams and physical tasks.
  • Must be able to independently travel to all LightHouse physical locations and events as needed.
