SALARY RANGE: $60,000.00 – $75,000.00

Founded in San Francisco in 1902, the LightHouse’s purpose is to promote the independence, equality and self-reliance of people who are blind or visually impaired. The LightHouse is currently in a period of growth, increasing our capacity to serve more low-vision and blind clients.

OVERVIEW:

The Braille Instructor will provide Braille instruction to blind and deaf-blind persons of all ages and ability levels throughout the LightHouse programs in San Francisco, Marin and other bay area locations as needed. The Braille Instructor will conduct individual pre-training evaluations of each student to determine specific needs, learning styles, interest, and ability to learn Braille. The teaching of Braille will provide students the opportunities to learn and/or explore learning Braille through several means: Perkins Brailler, slate and stylus, note takers, Braille displays etc. Depending on the needs of the student, Braille may also introduce additional tactile learning techniques and aides to meet the student’s needs for tactile reading and/or labeling. Grade 1 Braille may be taught in a small class or individual instruction as determined by the instructor and the student. Advance levels of Braille will be taught individually.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:

  • BA Rehabilitation Teaching, Teacher of the Visually Impaired or related field preferred.

Experience:

  • 2-3 years teaching Braille of all levels.
  • Knowledge of Braille use in both high-tech and low-tech areas.
  • Ability to teach all ages and all levels.

Other: 

  • Transcriber/Braille Teaching Certification preferred, or eligibility to apply for certification within one year of employment.

ACCOUNTABILITIES:

  • Complete assessment of all students to determine ability, need and level of Braille instruction for each student.
  • Develop goals and instructional plan based upon student’s needs: educational, employment related and or functional daily living related (i.e., labeling, note taking).
  • Demonstrate, provide instruction and/or inform students of technology options related to the use of Braille. For example: computer Braille displays, note takers etc.
  • Provide creative non-Braille labeling strategies for new Braille students or for students who are functionally unable to learn Braille.
  • Provide instruction in the use of the Perkins Brailler and slate and stylus.
  • Provide additional skill development lessons beyond the core curriculum texts.
  • Facilitate group and individual instruction.
  • Provide written assessment and recommendation, monthly updates and training summaries to all Department of Rehabilitation Counselors and third-party contracting sources (Regional Center, Veterans Administration etc.).
  • Conduct ongoing communication with elementary school teachers, Department of Rehabilitation staff, and affiliated agencies regarding their need for training and support with students and clients. Marketing the program.
  • Assure all billing, progress notes and written evaluations are completed by the 10th of each month.
  • Maintain professional growth and currency with Braille teaching techniques, equipment, codes, and literacy issues by attending conferences, visiting programs or literature review.
  • Provide instruction to persons who are Deaf-blind.
  • Maintain Perkins Brailler loan program.
  • Provide transcription support to the agency staff as requested.

ADDITIONAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:

  • Participation in All Staff, All Services, Consumer Review and Monthly Departmental Meetings as requested (Rehabilitation Services).
  • Turning in the following documentation for approval/authorization to the Coordinator of Rehabilitation Services: Time Sheets, Purchase Authorizations, Check Requests and Expense Reimbursement.
  • Assuring all publicity materials have been approved by the Director of Rehabilitation Services
  • Complete and accurate recording of Client information in the LightHouse Client Data Base.
  • Complete monthly billing on a timely basis (by the 1st of each month).
  • Maintain timely communication/responses to clients.
  • Maintain professional communication via email and voice mail on a timely and ongoing basis.
  • Client Confidentiality
  • Other duties as assigned.
