Get a Break on Your Taxes: Contribute to the LightHouse for the Holidays

At LightHouse for the Blind, our teachers are focused on helping students of all ages who are blind or have low vision gain skills and tools for independent living. Beyond that, they help our students build confidence, so they can go out in the world with their white cane (or guide dog) and be active members of society in any way that they desire.

Your contribution helps us provide a range of classes, from cooking without sight to robotics, possible. End of year is a great time to make a charitable donation and receive a deduction in your 2016 taxes.

Support LightHouse for the Blind today and join a passionate community of innovation, mentorship and caring. For 114 years, the LightHouse has been a place where people with low vision or blindness can learn what once seemed impossible. At the LightHouse our students take advantage of life-changing technology, pioneering teaching methods and blind role models.

You can play a critical role in our efforts to improve the lives of children, adults and seniors who are blind. Please donate today!

A reminder for those over 70:

The IRA Rollover allows donors age 70½ and older to make tax-free charitable gifts directly from their Individual Retirement Account (IRA) funds to charitable organizations. Donors may give up to $100,000. In December 2015, Congress passed the Protecting Americans from Tax Hikes (PATH) Act making the IRA Charitable Rollover a permanent charitable giving incentive.

It’s important  to know that tax rates on appreciated IRAs can be sky-high, but when you donate funds from your IRA none of the donation will be taxed, a particularly-efficient way for donors to help philanthropies.

Please donate today!

You can also make a contribution of any type or learn more about the IRA Rollover by contacting Jennifer Sachs at jsachs@lighthouse-sf.org or 415.694.7333.

Other Ways to Give

Other Ways to Give

Stocks, Bonds and Mutual Funds

A gift of appreciated stocks, bonds, or mutual funds is an excellent way to make a meaningful impact at LightHouse while lowering your tax liability.

When you donate appreciated stocks, bonds or mutual funds, you receive an income tax deduction for the market value of the asset on the date of transfer. You also avoid capital gains taxes on the appreciation. LightHouse will use funds from your gift to support our life-changing programs like Enchanted Hills Camp for the Blind and the Youth Employment Series.

For more information, please contact Jennifer Sachs, Director of Development, at giving@lighthouse-sf.org or 415-694-7333.

Our 501(c)(3) Tax ID is 94-1415317.

Donor Advised Funds

A Donor Advised Fund, or DAF, is a kind of charitable account in which a donor makes a tax-deductible gift to the account and is able to donate money to specific organizations at a later date.

While donors receive tax benefits at the time they give to a donor advised fund, charitable organizations don’t receive any benefits until a grant is made. By recommending LightHouse for a grant from your fund today, you are supporting LightHouse’s current programming of employment services for blind jobseekers, blindness skills training, camp experiences at Enchanted Hills Camp, and more.

If you have a DAF, you can make a difference today! Contact your DAF manager to recommend LightHouse for a grant. Our official name and mailing address is:

LightHouse for the Blind and Visually Impaired
1155 Market Street, 10th Floor
San Francisco, CA 94103

Our 501(c)(3) Tax ID is 94-1415317.

Qualified Charitable Distributions from Individual Retirement Accounts

If you’re 70.5 or older and have an Individual Retirement Account (IRA), you can make a meaningful impact for blind people of all ages though an IRA charitable rollover, also called a Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD). A QCD counts toward your Required Minimum Distribution but does not count as taxable income. Giving to LightHouse through an IRA QCD is an easy and effective way to simplify your tax return and increase your impact on life-changing programs blind people, like Enchanted Hills Camp, Youth Employment Series and Changing Vision, Changing Life.

To make a tax-free gift from your IRA, contact your account manager or financial professional.

For transfer information, you or your broker can contact Jennifer Sachs, Director of Development, at giving@lighthouse-sf.org or 415-694-7333.
