World of Sex: Did Someone Say Masturbation?

World of Sex: Did Someone Say Masturbation?

May 21

In 1995, Surgeon General Dr. Jocelyn Elders was fired for saying that masturbation should be included as part of comprehensive sex education for youth in America.  In response, Good Vibrations decreed the month of May, “National Masturbation Month”!  Despite the fact that masturbation can be one of the most important aspects of a healthy, satisfying erotic life, the subject still remains taboo for many. Masturbation can increase the amount of pleasure one can feel, improve partnered sex and relationships and can even be used as a tool to help resolve one's sexual concerns.  So let’s talk about it during this unique, free two-part workshop!

This playful workshop is designed specifically for people who are blind or low vision and will dispel myths about masturbation, blindness, and sexuality. As a group we will deconstruct some of the taboo messages surrounding the topic of masturbation and self-exploration. Workshop presenter Shauna Farabaugh will talk about the concept of incorporating mindfulness into self-pleasure, and introducing ways people can create a more conscious, deliberate and empowered approach to self-exploration. Join us for this unique one of a kind class to celebrate the sex most of us are having, but few of us are talking about!

About the workshop presenter:  Shauna Farabaugh is a certified Somatic Sex Educator based in San Francisco, CA who fiercely believes in the right to sexual expression for every body and is committed to making sex education more “sexcessible.”  She is particularly passionate about exploring the intersection between sexuality and life transitions of all kinds—both how life change impacts our sexual identity and expression and how we can connect with our sexuality in times of transition as a source of strength, resilience and wisdom to guide us through change.  Shauna has been a professional sex educator for a decade, with certifications from San Francisco Sex Information, The Institute for the Advanced Study of Human Sexuality, and the Somatic Sex Educators Association. Reverently irreverent, she brings a profound sense of play to both her group classes and one on one work with students of all genders, sexualities, and sexual lifestyles… because sex really is supposed to be fun!

This workshop is free to attend. Participants must RSVP to Laura Millar at lmillar@lighthouse-sf.org or 415-694-7345.
