Join the LightHouse’s Sexual Health Services Program Coordinator Laura Millar, MPH, M.A. and guest facilitator Sherry Pablo, as they introduce you to “Real Talk” for Young Adults. Real Talk is a series of monthly small group classes and discussion groups for young adults who are blind or visually impaired, covering a variety of sexual health topics.
January’s workshop is titled “Contraception & What You Should Know”. This workshop will explain the different contraception methods available, how to use each method correctly and with confidence.
Who: Young adults (ages 16 to 25) who are blind or have low vision. (Please note that individuals younger than 18 will require parental permission to attend.)
When: Saturday, January 21st; Sessions are staggered throughout the day, so if you are not enrolled in the YES program please RSVP and we can work out a time slot that best works for you.

Cost: Free to attend - you do not need to be a part of the YES workshops to attend the Real Talk workshop.
Preventing sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and unintended pregnancy are two important reasons to practice safer sex and use contraception. But did you know that having medically accurate sexual health information can actually help boost self-esteem and confidence in young adults? By providing them with the necessary tools, skills and knowledge, you can help them advocate for their own reproductive and sexual health needs.
In order to maximize the learning experience and respect the sensitive nature of these conversations, we will be breaking students into small groups and staggering the groups throughout the day with three to five participants per group. We will also have different contraceptive devices available for a more personalized hands on learning experience.

About the Workshop Leaders
This month we will be joined by Ms. Sherry Pablo who is serving in an AmeriCorps internship as a health educator with La Clinica de La Raza at Fuente Wellness Center in San Leandro. Blind herself, she provides health education and counseling services to youth and young adults in the areas of sexual reproductive health and nutrition. Ms. Pablo previously assisted Laura during the “All About Condoms” workshop in November and is excited to share her knowledge and experience as part of this months “Real Talk”. Sherry believes it is important to empower others to make lifestyle choices to improve well-being, which includes sexual health.
Laura Millar is LightHouse Program Coordinator for Sexual Health Services. Legally blind herself with a Master of Public Health as well as a Masters in Sexuality Studies, she conducts research to examine how individuals with vision loss learn about and navigate the world of dating, sex and intimate relationships. She facilitates workshops, trainings and in-services for individuals who are blind or have low vision, their family members and the organizations that serve them, ensuring that sexual health information and services are comprehensive, inclusive and accessible for everyone.
