Ring in the New Year by taking a swing at a 2,100-pound, 16th-century Japanese temple bell. Led by Revered Gengo Akiba, this inspiring ceremony will include a purification ritual and chanting of the Buddhist Heart Sutra. Participants may take turns ringing the bell to leave behind any unfortunate experiences, regrettable deeds or ill luck from the previous year. The museum welcomes the vision-impaired community to be among the first to ring the bell this year in groups of 6. After you ring the bell, join us downstairs for hands-on activities such as folding an origami crane to add to our 1,000 cranes project that holds our wishes for the New Year.
Bell-ringing begins at 9:30 a.m. with remarks from Consul General of Japan and Director Jay Xu. Doors open at 8:45 a.m. for vision-impaired community. Descriptive and touch tours will also be offered at 11 a.m.
