Come to the EBC campus on Tuesdays for an all levels Ukulele class. The parts of the ukulele, strings, chords, are all taught through description and assistance. Volunteers, called chord callers, will verbally call out the cord ahead of time, as an accessible way of reading music. The class starts at a more beginner level allowing for everyone to play and warm up, and progresses to more challenging songs. Nov 4(2 events) 10:00 am: Speak Up Skills: Strategies for Independence, Advocacy, and Conversation for Blind and Low Vision Adults (online) – When: 1st and 3rd Tuesdays (October-December) from 10:00 AM-11:30 AM October 7 and 21, November 4 and 18, and December 2 and 16 RSVP: Speak Up RSVP Link or Email sbolus@lighthouse-sf.org Speak Up Skills is a six-week, peer-led support group designed for people adjusting to vision loss. Are you struggling to adapt to changes in your vision? Do you feel alone in navigating daily life with impaired vision? This group offers a supportive space to share experiences, insights, and strategies for living independently with changing vision. Following a cycle of topics from Hannah Fairbairn’s When You Can’t Believe Your Eyes: Vision Loss and Personal Recovery, we’ll practice communication skills such as self-advocacy, boundary setting, and speaking up in medical settings, social events, and at home. Sessions include discussion, peer sharing, and role-plays. Reading the book is not required, but it is available on BARD (DBC11619) for those who want to explore more deeply. Space is limited; priority will be given to new participants, though returning students are always welcome. 12:30 pm: Hands On Ukulele (in-person) – Earle Baum Campus, 4539 Occidental Rd, Santa Rosa Always wanted to play an instrument and not sure how to get started? The series will cover the foundational concepts of the sport including fencing stance and footwork, how to orient yourself on the fencing strip or the area of play, blade work including attacks and parries (blocks), how to participate in a bout, as well as tactics and strategy. In class we’ll explore learning through listening and feel, and explore areas of balance and proprioception through fun, guided movement, and fencing drills. Together, we’ll build a go-to list of ideas designed with accessibility in mind! 5:00 pm: Fireside Chat with Lighthouse Guild New York (Hybrid) – Wednesday, November 12, 5:00 - 6:30 PM, Hybrid Event Join our Board Chair, Jennison Asuncion, alongside Thomas Panek, CEO of LGI, and James (Jim) Dubin, LGI Board Chair, for another fireside chat. They will provide an update on where things are with the exploration phase of the possible partnership between the two agencies as well as take your questions. We are excited this time to have both Thomas and Jim join us in-person. While this will be a hybrid event, we encourage as many of you who can, to join us live at the LH to have an opportunity to meet Jim and Thomas. Each person will get 3 cow pots. Each paper bag has three envelopes. Each envelope is labeled what seeds are inside. Inside the envelope is a plastic sandwich bag that holds the seeds. People should open one envelope at a time over a plate of something that can collect the small seeds. The squash envelope has 2 seeds; Chard envelope has 6 seeds and Lettuce envelope has 5 seeds. Dec 4(2 events) 9:30 am: Little Learners Playgroup (online) – Thursday mornings from 9:30 am to 10:15 am Bring your giggles and wiggles to Little Learners weekly Zoom Playgroup. Enjoy fun activities with your little one, ages 0-6, while learning strategies to support your child's visual, sensory, motor and concept development. Connect with other families who understand and share your experience raising a child who is blind, has low vision, or Cortical Visual Impairment (CVI). Weekly activities are designed to be accessible for all, and to build upon monthly themes that you can integrate into your family routines. All are welcome! Join fencing coaches and movement specialists Brandon Smith and Stacey Breidenstein from SF Fencing Academy for an intro to the sport of Blind Fencing. Fencing has been taught to the blind and visually impaired in the US since the 1950s! The series will cover the foundational concepts of the sport including fencing stance and footwork, how to orient yourself on the fencing strip or the area of play, blade work including attacks and parries (blocks), how to participate in a bout, as well as tactics and strategy. In class we’ll explore learning through listening and feel, and explore areas of balance and proprioception through fun, guided movement, and fencing drills.
