What does it really mean to be blind or low vision? Mike Cole, a veteran of all things blindness, will lead this call-in forum to discuss the many day-to-day ins-and-outs of blindness—from daily living in your home environment to navigating the vast expanse of bureaucracies. There's always a lively crowd sharing their own experiences, so make a cup of coffee (or tea), sit in your favorite chair and call in to chat the business of blindness.

Eco-friendly Arts and Crafts Club
Saturday, January 9th from 1:00 pm

Do you like making things? Do you have a green thumb with plants? Would you like to have fun with friends creating art that is friendly to our environment? LightHouse might have the perfect virtual gathering for you. Join us for our Eco Arts and crafts club, where we will explore different arts and craft projects with other youth who are blind or have low vision friends from all overr. Our January art project will have those that RSVP making our very own Biodomes. Future projects will range from things we can make out of recycled materials you can find around your house or projects that you can put into nature knowing you will not have a negative impact on our world.

Who: elementary and middle school students that are blind or have low vision
What: monthly arts and crafts lesson over zoom
When: Saturday, January 9th from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm
Where: anywhere you can access a zoom meeting
RSVP: a list a program supplies and the zoom meeting information will be shared with those that RSVP by 5:00 pm of the day before the program
Parents & Guardians: we’d love your help getting your children connected to our virtual program, however once they have joined, we ask that you please give them the space to participate individually

Actualmente, Conchita trabaja como la especialista de estudiantes ciegos y de baja vista en Maryñand, Y es la fundadora de Metas y co-fundadora de La Colación de Ñatinx con Discapacidades, donde intenta ser una voz de cambio para maestros, profesionales, y advocates, y promociona inclusión total para personas con discapacidades en latinoamérica.

Conchita was born in Mexico and grew up in California, where she received her Bachelor’s degree in Spanish, international studies, and history from Saint Mary’s college. She went on to receive a Masters degree in teaching, with a focus on teaching blind students, and is currently a special education doctoral student at George Washington University. Currently, Conchita works as the Maryland blind and low-vision specialist, and is the founder of Metas and co-founder of the National Coalition of Latinx with Disabilities, where she strives to be a voice for change for educators, professionals and advocates to make full inclusion a reality for people with disabilities in Latin-America.

LightHouse for the Blind is holding a Virtual Recruiting Event to attract those interested in working or volunteering at our Enchanted Hills Camp (EHC) summer programs. This event will consist of an informational job fair to present and discuss paid and unpaid positions during our 2021 summer offerings hosted at EHC.

We will discuss in depth positions including counselors, area leaders (Art, Aquatic, Enrichment, Equestrian, Nature and Recreation) as well as unpaid volunteer opportunities.

In addition, we will introduce and discuss Youth Employment Services (YES) Program mentors. These paid mentors will be in the areas of:

  • Access Technology
  • Independent Living Skills

The Employment Services Department offers a comprehensive Workshop Series specifically designed for Blind and Visually Impaired Job Seekers. Although the basic components of a job search are offered such as building powerful resumes, compelling cover letters and interview skills, graduates of the program state the most important skill learned is a sense of confidence and pride in their abilities. Join us through the Department of Rehabilitation and ready yourself for securing employment in the competitive job market!
