Sensing the Seasons on Zoom: Virtual Outdoor Education Retreat at Enchanted Hills Camp
Friday, June 12 through Sunday June 14

Back in November, the LightHouse Youth Program started hosting a seasonal outdoor education retreat, Sensing the Seasons, at EHC where youth learned more about nature and gained a deeper connection to EHC and our blind and low vision community. After the spread of Covid-19 we postponed our spring session of Sensing the Seasons to help flatten the curve. As we all do our part to keep others safe by physically distancing ourselves, we know lots of our blind and low vision friends are now feeling isolated at home and are looking for more connections to nature. To help with this, LightHouse invites you to join us for a modified virtual session of Sensing the Seasons.

This virtual Sensing the Seasons program will be hosted via Zoom on the weekend of Friday, June 12 through Sunday, June 14.

Our morning nature activities will be teaching us about flowers, birds, pollination and migration. The Afternoons and evening activities will have us connecting with your community and our camp with EHC history lesson and our virtual campfire. The program has been packed full of thought-provoking activities for students to learn and develop many skills from the Expanded Core Curriculum (ECC) from the WOLF School Naturalists and our experienced LightHouse for the Blind and Low Vision mentors. The ECC concepts that are addressed during our upcoming retreat include: independent living skills; sensory efficiency; self-determination; social interaction skills; and recreation and leisure.

Who: Youth between the ages of 12 and 20 that are low vision or blind as well as all past guests of past Sensing the Season and Health and Wellness Retreats participants
What: Virtual Enchanted Hills Outdoor Education Retreat
When: Friday, June 12 through Sunday June 14
Where: from the safety of your home via Zoom meeting
    RSVP: Monday, June 8

If you have any questions or would like to sign up for the Sensing the Seasons on Zoom, please contact Jamey Gump at youth@lighthouse-sf.org or (415) 694-7372.

The Business of Blindness Phone Chat: Make Coffee and Call Mike Cole

    Jun 15

What does it really mean to be blind or low vision? Mike Cole, a veteran of all things blindness, will lead this call-in forum to discuss the many day-to-day ins-and-outs of blindness—from daily living in your home environment to navigating the vast expanse of bureaucracies. There's always a lively crowd sharing their own experiences, so make a cup of coffee (or tea), sit in your favorite chair and call in to chat the business of blindness.

Congratulations, the finish line for 2020 is in sight, and while the fallout from this year will undoubtedly follow us for some time to come, at least we can turn the calendar page on the irony of a year jam-packed with vision metaphors and record low levels of actual clarity. • Cards Against Humanity (online)

    Cards Against Humanity (online)

    Jun 19

Join in on sizzling hot fun with a side of ridiculous while we gather for a few hours of Cards Against Humanity (CAH) hosted by Bay Area Blind Mom. On the third Friday of the summer months, from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m., log onto RS Games for an adults-only card night. Grab your favorite beverage and join friends across the nation on the RS Game platform and a little Zoom convo.

You must be comfortable with, or willing to learn, both the Zoom and RS Games platform. Prior knowledge of how to play CAH is not necessary. Detailed instructions on how to play CAH on RS Games will be handled just prior to playing the game. For details on how to join the Zoom chat and the actual Cards Against Humanity game, you must be 18 years of age or older and RSVP to Adult Program Coordinator Serena Olsen for the game night password and Zoom access info: solsen@lighthouse-sf.org or 415-694-7316.

Have burning questions? Here are some answers that might help.
Q: How do I download RS Games?
A: To download RS Games, visit http://www.rsgames.org/downloads.php and navigate to the download heading for the software appropriate to your preferred device.

Q: What type of device is necessary for playing?
A: Computers work best on the RS Games platform. However, with a little extra effort, smart phones do work.

Q: How will I know which game to join?
A: Select Cards Against Humanity from the list of games in the main menu of RS Games. Select join and find the game hosted by Bay Area Blind Mom. The password will be provided with Zoom access info.

Q: Why is there a Zoom part to the evening’s festivities.
A: Although RS Games has a voice chat option, it often makes glitches happen in the game. Being able to chat with friends on a separate platform such as Zoom makes for fun and frivolity. Simultaneously using both platforms make for an awesome time with friends.

EHC Give Back Summer Concert Series: Lawrence Brown And the Vitruvian Project (R&B Funk and covers) (online)

    Jun 19

Join us for a Facebook Live concert series with marvelously talented musicians every Friday evening June 12 through August 8 at 5:30 p.m PST. Concerts benefit the life-changing programs of Enchanted Hills Camp and the installation of Chimehenge.

We are raising money for Chimehenge, an interactive community musical instrument of epic proportions. Created by the fanciful scientist designers at the Exploratorium in San Francisco, ten-foot tall chimes of various widths are suspended on a frame that make musical tones when hit with mallets.
This interactive, audible sculpture will be installed in a glen in the woods on an offshoot of the main nature trail at Enchanted Hills Camp for the Blind. Enchanting indeed!

Help us raise $25,000 for the surfacing, trail extension and installation of Chimehange for our campers who have low vision and are blind.
