10:00 am: Pride 2019: Pan-Disabled Contingent "Be Seen"

Jun 30

We are excited to announce that LightHouse for the Blind and Visually Impaired will march in the 49th annual San Francisco Pride Parade on Sunday, June 30! The San Francisco Pride Parade’s mission is to educate the world, commemorate LGBT+ heritage, celebrate LGBT+ culture and liberate LGBT+ people. This aligns with LightHouse’s mission to promote equality and self-reliance for people who are blind or visually impaired, and promotes the visibility of LGBT+ blind and disabled people.

The LightHouse is committed to inclusivity. Blindness intersects with every single identity, and we recognize the need to amplify the voices of disabled LGBT+ people and our community members. LightHouse is proud to open our doors and extend an invitation to all disabled LGBT+ community members, their families, friends, allies and the organizations that serve them. Join us as we celebrate the intersectionality of people who are blind, have low vision, have other disabilities, and the many community members who identify with both communities or actively want to support LGBT+ visibility. It’s a central part of our blind experience to be seen, be heard and to be proud of who we are!

There are two options for participating with us:

  1. You can march with us in the parade from Embarcadero to Civic Center (about one and a half miles) as a large contingent
  2. You can celebrate with us at LightHouse headquarters at 1155 Market Street, 10th Floor where we have a view of Market Street. We’ll have a live stream of the parade as well as a volunteer providing audio description

After the parade, all registered participants are welcome to join the celebration at LightHouse (1155 Market St. 10th floor) for light refreshments. Only those registered will be allowed into the building so spread this link far and wide! All are welcome!

To register for this day as part of LightHouse, visit our Eventbrite page or call Allyson Ferrari at (415) 694 – 7320.

10:00 am: Knitting

Jul 11

Every week, our knitters gather to share their purls of wisdom and get in the loop on each other’s latest project, and usually end up in stitches spinning yarns. Whether you knit for pleasure, distraction or just practical economics, or you’ve never done it before and want to give it a try, there’s always room for another loom. Learn, refine, or teach a skill that makes your gift-giving budget lighter weight or support a student-led altruistic project like knitting chemo caps, beanies for babies, lap blankets or other creative applications.

1:00 pm: Guest Speaker Series: Claire Spector, Textile Artist

Jul 29

Guest Speaker Series: Claire Spector, Textile Artist
Monday, July 29, 1-2:00 p.m.

Legally blind textile artist Claire Spector sews by feel. Her “Blind Stitching: Vis-AbilityTM” exhibition of contemporary textile art will be on display in the LightHouse Gallery on the first floor of our 1155 Market St. headquarters, June 8 through December 20, 2019.

The exhibition explores working in different ways and stepping out into a wider world after blindness through the medium of contemporary textile art. Claire finds following the tactile work of sewing to be meditative. Sharing art guided by touch opens dialogue and new opportunities to explore fresh possibilities in making tactile art. Claire joins us to share her own journey through the intersection of artistry and blindness. Please RSVP to Adult Program Coordinator Serena Olsen at solsen@lighthouse-sf.org or 415-694-7316.
