Try it Workshop: Aerial HoopTry it Workshop: Aerial Hoop

Jul 14A lyra hoop is a circular ring similar to a hula hoop that's suspended in the air by a cable or any lengthy cord attached to the ceiling. It's often used by circus performers in showcasing aerial acrobatics for their acts.The Lighthouse is partnering with San Francisco Pole and Dance to present this Try It Workshop. If you've ever wanted to try this fun form of exercise and aerial art, this workshop is for you! We are looking for a small group of blind and visually impaired adults to attend a private class where you will learn the basics of lyra in a safe and supportive environment. Because of this wonderful partnership, we can offer this class at the very low cost of ten dollars. Teen CampTeen Camp
(All day)
Jul 18 – Jul 27Extended in length by popular demand, our summertime teen session is the crown jewel of Enchanted Hills Camp, where the most dynamic and charged bonds occur. Teens get to ride horses, learn woodworking, take riflery, and perform in the Redwood Grove Theater. What’s particularly special about teen session is how most of the Counselors and CITs are blind or visually impaired themselves, and many have attended camp as young teens. Here teens in grades 9 through 12 will experience all the offered youth camp activities and special events, including the STEM track which is built into this year’s teen timeline. Additionally, campers will participate in activities geared toward building leadership abilities and setting goals for the future.

Teens get to ride horses, learn woodworking, take riflery, and perform in the Redwood Grove Theater. What’s particularly special about teen session is how most of the Counselors and CITs are blind or visually impaired themselves, and many have attended camp as young teens. Here teens in grades 9 through 12 will experience all the offered youth camp activities and special events, including the STEM track which is built into this year’s teen timeline. Additionally, campers will participate in activities geared toward building leadership abilities and setting goals for the future.

You will leave your session with practical steps to take that will leave you feeling healthier and closer to your goals. Alicia is hoping to offer sessions every third Friday of each month between 1:30 to 3:30 p.m., so check the calendar and stay tuned. Sessions are free and on a first-come, first-serve basis. Jul 20 – Jul 21LightHouse for the Blind and Facebook are excited to partner for a weekend of coding and game development at the Enchanted Hills Summer Camp. Campers will have an opportunity to work side-by-side with Facebook software engineers over two days. Together, we will build a web-based choose-your-own-path game. Working in small groups, campers will design the narrative of their game and then code the paths through the narrative. They may embellish the game with mystery, riddles, useful objects and plot twists – whatever the imagination can conjure.
We ask that participants have experience using computers, the web, keyboarding skills, and any assistive technology used to access their computers, such as screen readers or magnification, and at least a familiarity with coding HTML web pages. For campers who want to explore more complex game interactions, the game platform will support interaction options enabled via custom JavaScript. The Facebook engineers will collaborate and help campers push the boundaries of their current coding skills. The campers will also learn to use the version control system Git, which is widely used in open source and professional code projects.

Our week long program is designed to develop those O&M skills most relevant to guide dog mobility. Students will work with specially trained O&M specialists at one of our partner organizations and will be instructed on various techniques such as:
- Increasing awareness of the environmental information available to a guide dog traveler.
- Developing an understanding of how to use auditory information like traffic sounds to remain oriented and to achieve correct alignment during general travel and street crossings.
- Using auditory information to analyze different types of intersections and determine the best time to initiate street crossings.
- Developing the ability to estimate the distance walked relative to the time taken (time-distance estimation).
Students will also participate in exercises to help simulate travel with a guide dog (Juno exercises) and learn to apply their sensory awareness and travel skills in a practical way. First time students will get to participate in Juno exercises with a guide dog instructor followed by an experience walk with a guide dog on the same route.

What’s particularly special about teen session is how most of the Counselors and CITs are blind or visually impaired themselves, and many have attended camp as young teens. Here teens in grades 9 through 12 will experience all the offered youth camp activities and special events, including the STEM track which is built into this year’s teen timeline. Additionally, campers will participate in activities geared toward building leadership abilities and setting goals for the future.

Jul 21 – Jul 27Guide Dogs for the Blind (GDB) is now offering an Orientation & Mobility Immersion Program! Our week long program is designed to develop those O&M skills most relevant to guide dog mobility. Students will work with specially trained O&M specialists at one of our partner organizations and will be instructed on various techniques such as:
- Increasing awareness of the environmental information available to a guide dog traveler.
- Developing an understanding of how to use auditory information like traffic sounds to remain oriented and to achieve correct alignment during general travel and street crossings.
- Using auditory information to analyze different types of intersections and determine the best time to initiate street crossings.
- Developing the ability to estimate the distance walked relative to the time taken (time-distance estimation).
Students will also participate in exercises to help simulate travel with a guide dog (Juno exercises) and learn to apply their sensory awareness and travel skills in a practical way. First time students will get to participate in Juno exercises with a guide dog instructor followed by an experience walk with a guide dog on the same route.

Monday, July 29, 1-2:00 p.m.Legally blind textile artist Claire Spector sews by feel. Her “Blind Stitching: Vis-AbilityTM” exhibition of contemporary textile art will be on display in the LightHouse Gallery on the first floor of our 1155 Market St. headquarters, June 8 through December 20, 2019.
The exhibition explores working in different ways and stepping out into a wider world after blindness through the medium of contemporary textile art. Claire finds following the tactile work of sewing to be meditative. Sharing art guided by touch opens dialogue and new opportunities to explore fresh possibilities in making tactile art. Have you ever wished you had an app for reading mail or simply accessing printed text on the go? Do you want to know the options available for portable scanning of documents? If so this is the workshop for you. Join us on July 30 from 1-4:00 p.m. and share in our exploration of mobile scanning apps. We will be looking at both free and low cost scanning apps designed to improve our access to the printed word. Join us and discover ways to access the information on a sign, business card or document you need to read when at rest or on the go. An RSVP is required for this class.
