12:00 pm: Diabetes Empowerment Education Program (DEEP)

If you or someone you know has, or is at risk for, pre-diabetes or Type 1 or 2 Diabetes, then this workshop is for you! You will learn about nutrition, physical activity, medications, stress management, and other tools to help you manage or lower your risk for Diabetes. This is a six-week course beginning on Wednesday, May 1st. The class will be every Wednesday from 12 to 2 p.m. for six weeks. You must attend four out of six classes to receive your certificate of completion. RSVP is required. Please contact Amber Sherrard for questions at (415)-694-7353 or asherrard@lighthouse-sf.org

7:30 am: Milestone Meetup: 2019 Annual Sea Kayaking Overnight trip to Angel Island with ETC

During the first weekend of June the LightHouse is excited to have our Milestone Meetup series join our ever-popular Sea Kayaking Trip with our friends from Environmental Travel Companions (ETC) for an overnight kayaking adventure to Angel Island. Individuals ages 14 and up who are blind or have low vision are sure to make friends and enjoy the beauty of Angel Island and the San Francisco Bay Area.

Our adventure will depart from LightHouse Headquarters at 7:30 a.m. sharp Saturday, June 1 for Schoonmaker Point Marina in Sausalito where we will meet our ETC Guides before the Kayaking trip to Angel Island. We will then spend the night in historic Civil War era buildings located in Angel Island State Park. Sunday we will pack up and make the return trip to LightHouse via Sausalito.

Who: Youth and Adults that are blind or have low vision (ages 14 and up)
What: LightHouse weekend Sea Kayaking adventure with friends from ETC
When: Depart 7:30 a.m. Saturday, June 1 and return 4:00 p.m. Sunday, June 2
Cost: The cost of the trip is $150.00 per student and includes overnight accommodations, food, kayak equipment and round trip transportation. Please note: thanks to grants from the City of San Francisco we can offer a 50% discount for those that live in San Francisco.
RSVP: Please note, limited space is available and students must submit payment plus ALL necessary paperwork before one's spot in the trip will be confirmed. The deadline to sign up for this trip is Friday, May 24.

Pole Dance combines strength, flexibility, athleticism, poise, and dance all into one confidence boosting activity. If you've ever wanted to try Pole Dance, this workshop is for you! We are looking for a small group of blind and visually impaired adults to attend a private class at San Francisco Pole and Dance where you will learn the basics of pole dance in a safe and supportive environment. As she confronts each Stranger Within, Maure gives us all hope that authenticity and a new and purposeful path can be re-discovered at any age. 1:30 pm: Lightening Nutrition Counseling

Enjoy a fifteen-minute one-on-one nutrition counseling session with Alicia Conner who is a visually impaired, Registered Dietitian and excited to provide her services to the LightHouse community. You will leave your session with practical steps to take that will leave you feeling healthier and closer to your goals. Alicia is hoping to offer sessions every third Friday of each month between 1:30 to 3:30 p.m., so check the calendar and stay tuned. Sessions are free and on a first-come, first-serve basis. 1:00 pm: Build Your Own at Home Workout Routine

If you are feeling a little stuck and need a boost in your workout routine and need some help from a certified personal trainer, we got you covered. In this two-hour session, you will learn from Fitness SF personal trainer, Miguel Cavazos, how to create your own at home, full-body workout routine to help you get leaner and stronger. You will learn the proper form for various exercises and leave knowing exactly what to do at home to stay fit and fierce. 10:00 am: Pride 2019: Pan-Disabled Contingent "Be Seen"

We are excited to announce that LightHouse for the Blind and Visually Impaired will march in the 49th annual San Francisco Pride Parade on Sunday, June 30! The San Francisco Pride Parade’s mission is to educate the world, commemorate LGBT+ heritage, celebrate LGBT+ culture and liberate LGBT+ people. This aligns with LightHouse’s mission to promote equality and self-reliance for people who are blind or visually impaired, and promotes the visibility of LGBT+ blind and disabled people.

The LightHouse is committed to inclusivity. Blindness intersects with every single identity, and we recognize the need to amplify the voices of disabled LGBT+ people and our community members. LightHouse is proud to open our doors and extend an invitation to all disabled LGBT+ community members, their families, friends, allies and the organizations that serve them. Join us as we celebrate the intersectionality of people who are blind, have low vision, have other disabilities, and the many community members who identify with both communities or actively want to support LGBT+ visibility. It’s a central part of our blind experience to be seen, be heard and to be proud of who we are!

There are two options for participating with us:

  1. You can march with us in the parade from Embarcadero to Civic Center (about one and a half miles) as a large contingent
  2. You can celebrate with us at LightHouse headquarters at 1155 Market Street, 10th Floor where we have a view of Market Street. We’ll have a live stream of the parade as well as a volunteer providing audio description

After the parade, all registered participants are welcome to join the celebration at LightHouse (1155 Market St. 10th floor) for light refreshments. Only those registered will be allowed into the building so spread this link far and wide! All are welcome!
