12:00 pm: Diabetes Empowerment Education Program (DEEP)12:00 pm: Diabetes Empowerment Education Program (DEEP) – If you or someone you know has, or is at risk for, pre-diabetes or Type 1 or 2 Diabetes, then this workshop is for you! You will learn about nutrition, physical activity, medications, stress management, and other tools to help you manage or lower your risk for Diabetes. This is a six-week course beginning on Wednesday, May 1st. The class will be every Wednesday from 12 to 2 p.m. for six weeks. Learn, refine, or teach a skill that makes your gift-giving budget lighter weight or support a student-led altruistic project like knitting chemo caps, beanies for babies, lap blankets or other creative applications. 7:30 am: Milestone Meetup: 2019 Annual Sea Kayaking Overnight trip to Angel Island with ETC7:30 am: Milestone Meetup: 2019 Annual Sea Kayaking Overnight trip to Angel Island with ETC – During the first weekend of June the LightHouse is excited to have our Milestone Meetup series join our ever-popular Sea Kayaking Trip with our friends from Environmental Travel Companions (ETC) for an overnight kayaking adventure to Angel Island. Individuals ages 14 and up who are blind or have low vision are sure to make friends and enjoy the beauty of Angel Island and the San Francisco Bay Area. Our adventure will depart from LightHouse Headquarters at 7:30 a.m. sharp Saturday, June 1 for Schoonmaker Point Marina in Sausalito where we will meet our ETC Guides before the Kayaking trip to Angel Island. We will then spend the night in historic Civil War era buildings located in Angel Island State Park. Sunday we will pack up and make the return trip to LightHouse via Sausalito. About NLS: 5:00 pm: Art Opening: Textile Artist Claire Spector5:00 pm: Art Opening: Textile Artist Claire Spector – Celebrate the opening of Claire Spector’s textile show, Blind Stitching: Vis-AbilityTM. The event begins at 5 p.m. in the LightHouse for the Blind Gallery (in the first floor lobby) showcasing Claire Spector’s work, and ends with a reception (starting at 6 p.m., on the 10th floor) with refreshments. included in this program will be a presentation where Claire will speak about her work, as well as opportunities for a guided tactile experience of the art with the artist. In addition during this evening, introductions of the Holman Prize for Blind Ambition judges will be announced. The judges are coming to San Francisco to select the winners of the 2020 Holman Prize for Blind Ambition with over 110 competitors from as far as Barbados, and are an impressive group of accomplished blind professionals. 2:00 pm: Museum Meanderings: Blind Stitching: Vis-Ability @ LH Gallery2:00 pm: Museum Meanderings: Blind Stitching: Vis-Ability @ LH Gallery – Museum Meanderings: Blind Stitching: Vis-Ability @ LH Gallery We are meandering only as far as our in-house gallery in June, where the new exhibit features Claire Spector, a legally blind contemporary textile artist. She sews by feel. The exhibition explores different textile techniques and follows Claire’s journey of stepping out into a wider world after becoming blind suddenly and without warning. Through the medium of contemporary textile art, the exhibition highlights everything from Claire’s first collaborative touch sewing projects in 2005 to more recent independent explorations. We are thrilled to have Claire herself as our docent for this very personal edition of Museum Meanderings. We are gathering a blind contingent which will be walking from LightHouse to the LGBT Center (a little under a mile) and/or taking public transit as a group. 1:30 pm: Lightening Nutrition Counseling1:30 pm: Lightening Nutrition Counseling – Enjoy a fifteen-minute one-on-one nutrition counseling session with Alicia Conner who is a visually impaired, Registered Dietitian and excited to provide her services to the LightHouse community. You will leave your session with practical steps to take that will leave you feeling healthier and closer to your goals. Alicia is hoping to offer sessions every third Friday of each month between 1:30 to 3:30 p.m., so check the calendar and stay tuned. Sessions are free and on a first-come, first-serve basis.
