10:00 am: Knitting

Nov 1

Every week, our knitters gather to share their purls of wisdom and get in the loop on each other’s latest project, and usually end up in stitches spinning yarns. Whether you knit for pleasure, distraction or just practical economics, or you’ve never done it before and want to give it a try, there’s always room for another loom. Learn, refine, or teach a skill that makes your gift-giving budget lighter weight or support a student-led altruistic project like knitting chemo caps, beanies for babies, lap blankets or other creative applications.

(All day): Audio Academy: Intro to DJing

(All day)
Nov 9 Nov 11

This fall LightHouse is pleased to announce our new Audio Academy, an ongoing series of immersive courses to teach employable skills in the field of audio engineering and production. For our first course, we are partnering with the Illinois-based, blind-run I See Music, the only school in the nation that offers a comprehensive audio education curriculum for blind and low vision learners. “Intro to DJing” will be a 3-day intensive workshop which will host a small group of students in our dorm-style residences for two nights for an immersive, high-value learning experience. The course will introduce students to the software Deejay Pro and teach students the basics of a fully accessible and non-visual DJ method. See full course details below. The workshop will also include a comprehensive discussion of the vocational opportunities in the DJ field from Byron Hardin, founder and CEO of I See Music,.Come, spend the weekend with your fellow audio heads, and learn the skills needed for competitive employment in the music and entertainment industry. What is Audio Academy? Back in the days of analog, being a blind radio disc jockey, record producer or even a house engineer was not out of the question. But with the turn of the century and the turn to digital, the industry traded knobs, buttons and sliders for inaccessible graphic user interfaces on screens. For several years, the accessibility of the audio industry screeched to a halt. Today, the landscape is greatly improved: industry leaders like Apple, AVID, Algoriddim and Native Instruments have made commitments to accessibility, and blind individuals can finally operate the tools of the trade to become studio owners, radio producers and musicians in a competitive working environment. LightHouse Audio Academy will continue over the course of the year with talks, informal gatherings and more immersive weekends (each weekend will focus on a different topic, software or hardware application). Please note: all who are interested in the workshop must fill out our brief application form. For more information email communications@lighthouse-sf.org.

9:00 am: Youth Extreme Recreation Adventure: An Awesome Journey to Guide Dogs

Nov 10

A close-up of a beautiful Black Labrador guide dog.

During the 2018 and 2019 school years, the LightHouse’s Youth Program will be hosting monthly extreme recreation activities and adventures for youth that are blind or have low-vision. Those that sign up for these monthly outings will have opportunities to make new friends, meet mentors, and develop life skills that they will help them be successful in other aspects of life - all while enjoying the wonderful recreation options that the Bay Area and surrounding areas have to offer.

During our visit to Guide Dogs, students will get a chance to attend a guide dog graduation ceremony, tour the campus, learn from peers and mentors about why someone who is blind might choose to travel with a service animal, and the responsibilities that come with that decision. In addition to all the excitement that comes with puppies and pizza, students that sign up for this outing will have the opportunity to practice their mobility skills with peers and mentors in a variety of transit forms such as buses, trains, and even a ferry.

The program is open for 10 blind or low-vision students between the ages 8 and 18. This month’s program is free for all students that complete all trip waivers and the student intake process with LightHouse before the RSVP deadline of 4:00 PM on Wednesday, November 7.

If you have any questions or would like to sign up for this outing, please contact Jamey Gump, Youth Services Coordinator at youth@lighthouse-sf.org or 415-694-7372.

(All day): O&M Immersion Program with Guide Dogs for the Blind

(All day)
Nov 11 Nov 17

Guide Dogs for the Blind (GDB) is now offering an Orientation & Mobility Immersion Program! Our week long program is designed to develop those O&M skills most relevant to guide dog mobility. Students will work with specially trained O&M specialists at one of our partner organizations and will be instructed on various techniques such as:

  • Increasing awareness of the environmental information available to a guide dog traveler.
  • Developing an understanding of how to use auditory information like traffic sounds to remain oriented and to achieve correct alignment during general travel and street crossings.
  • Using auditory information to analyze different types of intersections and determine the best time to initiate street crossings.
  • Developing the ability to estimate the distance walked relative to the time taken (time-distance estimation).

Students will also participate in exercises to help simulate travel with a guide dog (Juno exercises) and learn to apply their sensory awareness and travel skills in a practical way. First time students will get to participate in Juno exercises with a guide dog instructor followed by an experience walk with a guide dog on the same route.

Youth Employment Series (YES) November 16-18, 2018 Creating Your Best Self through Mind and Body: Ingredients for Personal Empowerment

In November, join the LightHouse Youth Employment Series, YES, workshop focusing on the importance of personal wellbeing in establishing self-confidence. Youth will have the opportunity to tryout exciting fitness activities, learn positive time and stress management skills, experiment with delicious and fun food recipes all while connecting with blind and low vision peers and mentors as they learn the importance of effective workplace readiness and skills to access work and academic opportunities.

YES workshops are monthly weekend-long learning experiences emphasizing the vocational enrichment of low vision and blind youth, increasing and providing access to a multifaceted array of mentorship, employment readiness skills, and alternative accessible techniques. The YES Workshop in November will empower students with the tools to present themselves with confidence, learn strategies to develop habits for maintaining personal wellbeing as well as develop the imperative soft skills needed to achieve personal success. The weekend is spent learning from blind and low vision mentors and engaging in creative hands-on activities which further support youth to explore and achieve their individualized and professional aspirations.

Workshop Learning Objectives:
1. Participants will learn and hone crucial work-place readiness soft skills (time and stress management, effective communication, collaboration, etc.) and how these skills relate to personal confidence and success in and outside of the home.
2. Transitional age youth will elevate their attitude and awareness in a variety of opportunities from accessing health and wellness resources in their communities to building positive habits for personal and professional growth.
3. Students will participate in interactive activities as they plan, prepare for, and execute goals for confidence building and a variety of settings from academics, cooking, social, to employment.
4. The over-night nature of the YES workshop provides opportunities for students to refine their workplace readiness soft skills including effective social and professional communication and independent living all while building community with their blind and low vision peers.

Things to Bring:
1. A notetaking device or implement (braille note, pen, slate and stylus, phone with keyboard, laptop, etc.). You will be asked to complete activities electronically.

Nov 22

Every week, our knitters gather to share their purls of wisdom and get in the loop on each other’s latest project, and usually end up in stitches spinning yarns. Whether you knit for pleasure, distraction or just practical economics, or you’ve never done it before and want to give it a try, there’s always room for another loom. Learn, refine, or teach a skill that makes your gift-giving budget lighter weight or support a student-led altruistic project like knitting chemo caps, beanies for babies, lap blankets or other creative applications.
