    October 4: Unpacking PDFs
    PDF, or Portable Document Format files are some of the most commonly used types of documents. If you're an access technology user, they just might be your most common source of techno-stress! We'll discuss strategies and techniques for reading PDF files, from the fully accessible to the completely inaccessible.

    October 11: Introduction to Access Technology
    What is accessible technology and how do we learn to use it? If you, a friend or family member are a person who is new to blindness or having low vision, or new to using access technology tools, this event is for you. We’ll discuss how you can use mainstream tools like smartphones, voice assistants, and computers, as well as a few specialized gadgets for reading books and recording information at the touch of a button. We’ll talk about what services and resources are available for learning to use these tools, and we’ll give some tips for friends and family members who want to be supportive of the learning process.

    October 18: What's New With iOS 16
    With a new iOS version comes new features and changes to the iOS experience, but what does this mean for access technology users? How do you customize your lock screen? Can you really unsend a text message? What are the bugs or fixes you should know about before or after updating your phone? We'll discuss the ups and the downs of iOS 16 and share our tips and tricks.

    Following our discussion in which we introduced access technology, lets take a look at the people behind the machines. Each trainer will discuss their favorite device or software that they teach, their favorite productivity tool, and their favorite app for entertainment.

    The National Federation of the Blind is a nationwide community of members that believe blind people can live the lives they want. We meet online via Zoom with the following schedule:

    6:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. – Virtual Happy (Half) Hour
    6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. – Chapter Meeting

    G-Vibes are Gratitude Visually Impaired Blind Energizing Sessions. Gratitude is strongly and consistently associated with greater happiness. Gather online and share what you feel grateful for in a safe and welcoming space and hear what others share as well. These mid-week sessions can help you feel more positive emotions, relish good experiences, improve your health, deal with adversity and build strong relationships.

    Get your creative juices flowing every week in the LightHouse Craft Room. We’ll explore a variety of different arts media and prompts that will change each month. Let loose your curiosity and sense of play in a supportive space where you are welcome to experiment with the current LightHouse projects, or bring your own craft to work on alongside friends. No experience is necessary. Wear or bring something you don't mind getting dirty.

    This October, we will continue exploring book structures such as map fold books, one page zines and stab stitch books along with other paper things that cam be opened such as origami boxes and envelopes.

    oin the LightHouse’s monthly access Technology Spanish meeting. Tecnología para todos is a space where users share their knowledge and experience. Each month, we talk about services, applications and devices available for blind and low vision users. This event will be conducted using the Zoom platform. You can connect to Zoom using a computer, an app, or by dialing in from any phone.     Get to know our block, heading left when leaving Lighthouse HQ. Let's meet at reception on the 10th floor then head out and explore a couple good spots to know. First, we will scope out Whole Foods and get to know the basic layout. Then, under the leadership of Volunteer Manager and Museums Maven, Allyson Ferrari, we will duck into Trinity Plaza right next door and take a look at the intriguing selection of sculpture throughout the space, much of which is tactile. There's outdoor seating where we can enjoy our lunch.
