Translating Space Images Into Sound: A Youth and Family Lesson About Making Space Accessible

Monday, January 25th @ 5:30pm

Join us as we hear from visualization scientist Kimberly Kowal Arcand from the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics and NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory along with collaborator, astrophysicist and musician Matt Russo from science-art outreach project SYSTEM Sounds as we learn about a new sonification technique that translates cosmic images into music. Our conversation and proceeding presentation from Kimberly will go into more detail about how they do this and answer any questions you may have about this cool new way we represent data and images of space. 10:00 am: Yoga: Alignment Flow (Onlline)

Yoga: Alignment Flow – Online, Tuesdays 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.

LightHouse yoga instructor Kimm Ropicky knows that now, more than ever, it’s vital to our health and wellbeing to get some movement into our lives. Kimm is offering an online class to the LightHouse community. All levels of experience are welcome. The sequence of postures will be consistent, changing quarterly, move slowly to provide ample time to transition between movements, and include insightful tools to learn alignment at home. Joining the Zoom meeting with your video enabled allows Kimm to provide more detailed feedback, particularly in the event you ask for clarification.

What You Need to Know:

  • To register, you’ll need to create an account via Kimm’s website. Follow these instructions:
    • Go to www.KimmRopickyYoga.com/livestream
    • Click the “SIGN UP” button next to the “LightHouse Alignment Flow” class you wish to attend.
    • Complete the form with your account details, make your donation, if desired, and read the waiver before you click the “BOOK NOW” button.
    • You will receive three emails: an email from Ribbon confirming your registration, another providing instructions on how to use the Ribbon, and the third one prior to class with the Zoom link.
    • NOTE: For those already with an account, go to the same webpage above, choose your desired class, and then click the Sign In on the top right of the screen.
  • Duration--All classes are 60 minutes in length.
  • Donations--Class is donation-based. Please pay what you can. No one will be turned away for a lack of funds. Recommended donation is $10-$20.
  • In order to create a safe space for connection with our community, the Waiting Room will be enabled, and the host will let you in as soon as possible, but no more than 10 minutes after the start.
  • Registration will end one hour prior to class.
  • Consult your Doctor--Please consult with your doctor before practicing, to be mindful of any conditions you may have and how this practice may impact you.
  • Class Description--Yoga: Alignment-based, using props to enhance your understanding and reference within postures.
  • Props strongly recommended: 2 Blocks or 1 chair, a strap or a belt, and a blanket (throw blanket).

7:00 pm: Not So Bored Game Night (online)

Each week students from the Lighthouse Youth Program gather for our virtual Not So Bored Game Night. A weekly evening of fun and games for Blind and low vision youth from all over. Games start at 7:00 pm on Tuesday evenings and will include trivia contests, scavenger hunts and other interactive games that will have youth making friends. In addition, the LightHouse staff each week’s games will be led by a guest mentor that will also share insight into their education, career and life as a person who is blind or has low vision.

Who: students under 18 that are blind or have low vision

9:30 am: Stress Reduction & Meditation (online)

Stress Reduction & Meditation Goes Virtual

Please note that although LightHouse is closed for the holidays, this virtual class is still being held on December 22.

Each Wednesday morning we offer a series of short, meditation-based practices for relaxation and stress reduction. The group is appropriate for both beginners and advanced practitioners and instruction is provided in all aspects of the practice. Instructor Jeffrey Schneider has more than 40 years of meditation and teaching experience. It is a virtual class using the Zoom platform—everyone is welcome as little or often as they like. Dial in, find a comfortable position, breathe deeply, clear your head, and de-stress.

2:00 pm: Meet You At The House

Pull up a comfy chair and join Community Outreach Coordinator, Sheri Albers, in the LightHouse virtual living room to talk about all things LightHouse! Have you been experiencing changes in your vision that have been affecting your daily life, but don’t know what to do? LightHouse of San Francisco is here to help. This is the perfect place to come and ask the questions that you need answers to.

For the January meeting, our guest will be Kate Williams, LightHouse Director of the LightHouse Employment Services. The Employment Immersion virtual workshop is now being offered nationally on Zoom. Come talk to Kate about what her team has been doing to assist people who are blind or have low vision join the workforce. We will also have a member of our Adaptations Store on hand to let us know about the latest and greatest in blindness and low vision products on the market.

4:00 pm: Reel Escape: Audio-Described Movie Club

To help you break up the routine and escape for some fun, join your friends for our weekly Reel Escape Audio Description Movie Club. This weekly remote social gathering of blind and low vision youth takes place over zoom on Thursday afternoons at 4:00 pm. Films will be family-friendly and have audio descriptions enabled. Join us each week to help choose future films. Past films have included: Toy Story, Frozen, Inside out, Minions, Lion King and many other classics.

New Year, New Gear!

Where: Via Zoom (Zoom can be accessed almost anywhere. Join us by using your phone, tablet, or computer. Zoom information will be shared prior to the event with those who RSVP.)

Who: Families of youth ages 14-22 and their blind and low vision child or student.

What: All are welcome! En Comunidad is a program designed to bring students and their families valuable resources and relevant information, in Spanish. Come to learn, ask questions, build connections with fellow families of blind and low vision students, and meet blind mentors!

New year, new gear! Do you have a favorite item that has made your life easier or more accessible lately? Want to share and learn about all kinds of cool new gadgets? Then come join us for En Comunidad this January, where we’ll be chatting about all the fun and useful tools we’ve been loving.
