August 2: Tech on Task
Whether you’re headed back to school, back to work, or just want to perform tasks more efficiently, productivity involves more than knowing the right screen reader or magnification commands. We’ll share our approach to managing time and tasks, choosing the right tools and format to get a job done, hearing screen readers and conversations at once, and explaining how we work with access technology to others.

August 9: Take Note
Are you tracking a dozen Zoom meetings a week? How about preparing for an upcoming exam? Are you trying to keep track of the names and numbers of folks you've met through online networking events? Perhaps you are preparing for school, in person, or in the virtual classroom. Maybe you are simply interested in learning different ways to take notes. We will discuss the different aspects to notetaking and the uses of adaptive notetaking tools and devices such as digital recorders, Braille devices, and notetaking solutions on smartphones.

One task our access technology team frequently assists with is device set up. With hands-on demos plus tips and tricks, we’ll show how we configure a PC or iPhone to be accessible as soon as we take it out of the box, and initial settings that can make the set up and learning experience go more smoothly.

G-Vibes are Gratitude Visually Impaired Blind Energizing Sessions. Gratitude is strongly and consistently associated with greater happiness. Gather online and share what you feel grateful for in a safe and welcoming space and hear what others share as well. These mid-week sessions can help you feel more positive emotions, relish good experiences, improve your health, deal with adversity and build strong relationships.

Get your creative juices flowing every Thursday afternoon as the Craft Room reopens in person for us to explore a variety of different arts media and prompts that will change each month. Loose your curiosity and sense of play in a supportive space where you are welcome to experiment with the current projects or bring your own craft to work on alongside friends. No experience is necessary. Wear or bring something you don't mind getting dirty.

THIS MONTH: We will delve into the wonders of paper sculpture, focusing on creating dimensional paintings and vessels out of paper mulch and other paper sculpting tools and techniques. .

2:00 pm: Introduction to AT Session 2 (online)

An 8 week course that introduces access technology concepts, terminology, and options on smartphones and computers in a group setting. The goal for this group introductory course is to help students not only learn about the basics of access technology but to also learn alongside a community. With our knowledgeable and patient AT instructors, we hope to provide a solid foundation for people who are completely new to access technology or who want to solidify their understanding of what access technology is and can do to empower them.

Disclaimer: Session 2 has been fully booked already. If you are interested in joining Session 3, which will start in October, you may email jko@lighthouse-sf.org to be added to the email campaign and put on wait list.

5:30 pm: Harry Potter and the Cursed Child and Haptic Tour

Is it time to go back to school, return in-person to the Lighthouse or head off to Hogwarts? Well, this August, Lighthouse participants of all ages get the chance to do it all! Just around the time that most are going back to school and as the Lighthouse Community Services team gears up for in person fall programs our program team invites you to join us for an audio described live performance of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child. "Have you ever imagined what Harry Potter might be doing when he grew up?" This is your chance to find out.

Who: LightHouse participants and staff of all ages and one guest  Please note - our ticket numbers are limited and students of the LightHouse will be given priority

What: Haptic tour and audio described theatrical performance of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child

When: Thursday, August 18th from 5:30 pm to 10:30 pm - including Haptic Tour, social time with snacks, and the play itself (the runtime for the play is 3.5 hours with an 18-minute intermission)

Where: The Curran Theater located @ 445 Geary St, San Francisco, CA 94102

Cost: $76 per person (including: ticket and charcuterie snack box)

RSVP: Sign-ups will be taken on a first come first serve basis starting 9:00 am Monday June 27 and will wrap up on Friday July 29. Please email us at CommunityServices@lighthouse-sf.org to secure your ticket.
