9:00 am: At Home With APH: TMAP - Building Environmental Literacy at a Distance

Jul 8

This a live webinar that extolls the virtues of Tactile Maps Automated Production (TMAP), a project promoting independent travel and tactile map literacy for blind people, that has timely applications for Orientation & Mobility (O&M) instruction in a time of distance learning.

The presenters are:

  • Greg Kehret, Director, Media and Accessible Design Lab, LightHouse for the Blind and Visually Impaired
  • Jennifer Huey, Certified Orientation & Mobility Specialist, LightHouse for the Blind and Visually Impaired
  • Sarah McIntyre, Certified Orientation & Mobility Specialist, LightHouse for the Blind and Visually Impaired
  • Steve Lowry, Teacher of Students with Visual Impairment, Washington State School for the Blind

Participants will gain an understanding of how to use the TMAP app to generate braille and tactile street maps of any address, and how to supplement Orientation & Mobility instruction using TMAP effectively. We'll briefly describe the history and development of TMAP software; teach the steps to create a TMAP street map; identify implications for use of TMAP in O&M instruction, including route preview, environmental literacy, and special awareness; and identify strategies to teach map-reading readiness skills.

Primary Core or ECC Areas are Orientation & Mobility, but we will also touch on Compensatory Skills (i.e., skills necessary for accessing the core curriculum including concept development; communication modes; organization and study skills; access to print materials; and the use of braille, tactile graphics, and tactile symbols).

ACVREP: CEUs are only available for the live presentation at this time. To collect CEUs, please listen for the opening and closing codes during the live session and send these, along with your first and last name, to outreach@aph.org and a certificate will be emailed to you the following week.

Register for the webinar.

5:00 pm: Cards Against Humanity (online)

Jul 24

Join in on sizzling hot fun with a side of ridiculous while we gather for a few hours of Cards Against Humanity (CAH) hosted by Bay Area Blind Mom. On the third Friday of the summer months, from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m., log onto RS Games for an adults-only card night. Grab your favorite beverage and join friends across the nation on the RS Game platform and a little Zoom convo.

You must be comfortable with, or willing to learn, both the Zoom and RS Games platform. Prior knowledge of how to play CAH is not necessary. Detailed instructions on how to play CAH on RS Games will be handled just prior to playing the game. For details on how to join the Zoom chat and the actual Cards Against Humanity game, you must be 18 years of age or older and RSVP to Adult Program Coordinator Serena Olsen for the game night password and Zoom access info: solsen@lighthouse-sf.org or 415-694-7316.

Have burning questions? Here are some answers that might help.
Q: How do I download RS Games?
A: To download RS Games, visit http://www.rsgames.org/downloads.php and navigate to the download heading for the software appropriate to your preferred device.

Q: What type of device is necessary for playing?
A: Computers work best on the RS Games platform. However, with a little extra effort, smart phones do work.

Q: How will I know which game to join?
A: Select Cards Against Humanity from the list of games in the main menu of RS Games. Select join and find the game hosted by Bay Area Blind Mom. The password will be provided with Zoom access info.

Q: Why is there a Zoom part to the evening’s festivities.
A: Although RS Games has a voice chat option, it often makes glitches happen in the game. Being able to chat with friends on a separate platform such as Zoom makes for fun and frivolity. Simultaneously using both platforms make for an awesome time with friends.

Jul 31

July's workshop runs weekdays from July 6 to 31.

There IS a job market! Job seekers who are blind and have low vision are in demand to work remotely. Let LightHouse support you on your pathway to employment in these challenging times.

Our award-winning Employment Immersion program is now available virtually. Now is the time to join us via the Zoom conferencing platform. The program begins the first Monday of every month and runs each weekday. This comprehensive month-long training is specifically designed for people who are blind and have low vision. We are committed to providing group and individual guidance from the fundamentals of job search, to the complexities of disclosure of one’s disability with pride and confidence, to instruction on job search techniques, to honing interview skills. Most importantly, this program focuses on the participant’s individual job goals.

YES Summer Academy Goes Online!

Youth Employment Series (YES)
July 6 (Monday) – August 7 (Friday), 2020

Registrations open until June 12, 2020

The LightHouse for the Blind and Visually Impaired Youth Employment Series (YES) is excited to offer a redesigned 2020 Academy for aged between 16 – 24 years youth who are blind or have low vision.

Despite the many changes as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, Youth will continue to have the opportunity to fill their summer with engaging and valuable learning experiences. They will have the chance to participate in independent living trainings, employment readiness projects, peer social hours, and mentoring conversations with life-long friends, mentors and supportive LightHouse staff through this groundbreaking program.

The YES Virtual Summer Academy is a 5-week long interactive experience. Youth will gain first-hand knowledge of building confidence and positive identity, learn collaboration and how to be a "team player”. They will get to know how to identify strengths and interests, as well as acquire a sense of direction through personalized job exploration learning activities.

The program will culminate with youth investigating career interests and equipping themselves with the tools to transition successfully. These include:

  • Career/strength assessment plans
  • Working resume
  • Interview strategies

Specific days will have a particular focus:

  • Mondays – presenter spotlight and seminars
  • Wednesdays - group-based discussions and weekly community building evening sessions.
  • Fridays - one-on-one coaching sessions

Students will receive 5-6 hours of direct weekly instruction via Zoom, phone, and email communication, approximately 2 hours per day, 3 days per week; they are also expected to complete application activities and work-based learning projects along with scheduled sessions.

The YES Summer Academy will encourage students to reflect and apply their learning experience to their lives and be more prepared for future dream opportunities and adulthood.
