Tech Together Online: Tech for Staying in Touch

    Dec 8

Join the LightHouse Access Technology team for a series of informal conversations on technology topics relevant to these current times. Tech Together is a chance to share your knowledge and experience, as well as learn from other blind technology users. LightHouse Access Technology staff share tips and resources on each week’s topic. Then there is time for LightHouse students and friends to add to the conversation, as we all learn from each other.

Topics are decided on a rolling basis as our community’s needs evolve during shelter in place.

December 8: Tech for Staying in Touch

If you’re going to be physically distant from friends and family this holiday season, make sure you’re up to date with all the voice and video apps you can use to connect with friends near and far.

    Upcoming Topics

    December 15: Tech for Description

Whether you want to know what is in a photo or get live descriptions of scenes and objects in the world around you, technology brings many options. From crowd sourced descriptions from the community, to AI object recognition.

    December 22: Tech Tales

During this all-audience participation gathering of Tech Together Online, we invite you to share a brief tale of Access Technology past, present, or future. Whether you share your memories of your first AT, current favorite tools, or a wish for technology of the future, this will be a fun time to come together before the holiday break.

Join us for one or all these conversations. RSVP to AT@lighthouse-sf.org or leave a voicemail at 415-694-7343. RSVP by email is preferred.

One Step Forward: O&M Drop-In Forum for Adults 55 and Over

One Step Forward: O&M Drop-In Forum for Adults 55 and Over

    Dec 9

One Step Forward is a 6-week drop-in open discussion forum for students new to orientation and mobility (O&M) who have questions or fears about orientation and mobility training or are simply curious and would like to connect, learn, and converse. Each week, students will engage with each other and LightHouse Orientation & Mobility Specialists Jennifer Huey and Sarah McIntyre, developing comfort and confidence through conversation about O&M. Topics will be planned for each conversation, but this discussion group is for you, so if an O&M topic is on your mind, bring it to the group! This is an opportunity to pose your personal thoughts and questions about learning skills for independent travel.

Who should attend? This 6-week class is for LightHouse students 55 years and older who have not received O&M training, or who have received very little and are not currently participating in O&M training but are curious, “almost ready,” or maybe are ready but are waiting to begin in-person training. This group may also appeal to you if you are looking to connect with other peers who share an interest in O&M and want to discuss the benefits of training. The best thing is, you don’t need any O&M experience to participate!

What to expect each week: Group conversation will focus on a planned topic, but there will also be time to ask questions that are relevant to you. Because this is a drop-in class, you can commit to just one class, all six, or as many as you want. The decision is yours! Participate if the topic is of interest or if you just want to connect and listen. All we ask is that you are open-minded and are interested in taking one step toward independent travel. This forum will use the Zoom platform, but any student with access to a telephone is welcome to join by calling in. Our goal is to make this program low-tech, user-friendly and approachable. The first meeting will be held December 9, 2020 from 10:00-11:00, and the planned topic is “Exploring Covid-safe strategies for navigating the holidays.”

Dates for upcoming meetings and planned topics for conversation:
    December 9, 2020: Covid-safe holiday strategies
January 13, 2021: Defining training goals and priorities: New year, new you!
January 27, 2020: Training opportunities: Understanding the differences and intersection between LightHouse services
February 10, 2021: O&M in and around the house: movement and tactile awareness
February 24, 2021: O&M in and around the house: sound
March 10, 2021: What’s stopping you? Exploring the white cane and potential barriers

    Class Details:
    When: December 9, 2020 – March 10, 2021. Six Wednesday morning meetings (Dec. 9; Jan. 13 & 27; Feb. 10 & 24; March 10).
    Time: 10:00 – 11:00 am
How to Participate: Zoom, either via phone or the Zoom app
    Cost: It’s free!

    Dec 14

Second Monday of the month: 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

This fall, LightHouse’s Youth Program is excited to offer a new series for our youth that are blind or have low vision. In this new monthly series, Lighthouse staff will lead the panel of young blind leaders through a conversation about topics important to the success of youth. Each month will have new mentors sharing their thoughts, stories and advice about that month’s topic. Students that attend will also have ample time to ask questions to that month’s mentors. Topics of our monthly panel will include subjects such as advocacy, career exploration, social interaction, self-determination, accessible technology and recreation and leisure, with a focus on the additional challenges the COVID-19 pandemic has given all of us.

    Upcoming Topics

October 12 - Your Virtual Technology Toolbox

For our October Monthly Mentor Monday, youth will learn about all sorts of high and low-tech gear that that other blind and low vision youth use to be successful.  Whether it’s a simple slate and stylus or a quick note, the latest braille display, or software that can help you access for class materials or things in other aspects of life.

November 9: Making connections as a blind or low vision student
    December 14: TBD

If you have any questions or would like to RSVP to Monthly Mentor Mondays, please contact, Jamey Gump at jgump@lighthouse-sf.org or 415-694-7372. RSVP by 5:00 p.m. the Friday before each event.

Topics are decided on a rolling basis as our community’s needs evolve during shelter in place.

    December 15: Tech for Description

Whether you want to know what is in a photo or get live descriptions of scenes and objects in the world around you, technology brings many options. From crowd sourced descriptions from the community, to AI object recognition.

  • LightHouse of Marin; Our Services Continue, but our Office is Closing

LightHouse of Marin; Our Services Continue, but our Office is Closing

    Dec 25

The LightHouse opened one of it's first satellite Offices, LightHouse of Marin on 4th Street in 2000. Launching both the office and Adaptations in Marin was very exciting and quite a feat. There, we began (and still continue) our collaboration and connection with Vision Impaired of Marin (www.bvim.org).

Since enjoying a downtown site, the LightHouse office moved to the Whistlestop Active Aging Center (now Vivalon) and then 851 Irwin Street, our goal, always staying central to transit so that consumers could easily access our office and staff. Like many agencies and businesses, the pandemic has impacted our ability to train and meet with students in-person, and maintaining an office where no one could enter, was a fiscal challenge. So with heavy hearts, after twenty years in San Rafael, we are announcing that the LightHouse of Marin will be closing it's office at Irwin Street at the end of December 2020, however, we will still continue to provide training in Marin County and perhaps return with a new 'real' open door in the future.

Like many services in Marin, training and programs have gone virtual (Zoom) and since March 13th, this is how we have continued to connect with our blind and low vision students. Looking forward into 2121, we will continue to provide training virtually, and resume in-person training in Marin when it is safe for both instructors and students. The LightHouse is committed to continued training and support of Marin County blind and low vision residents, and we have served hundreds over the past twenty years. Marin County can continue to count on the LightHouse and reach out for training and support. Jeff Carlson, our LightHouse Social Worker who has been our incredible primary staff person in Marin will continue to be the contact for Marin. While the current LightHouse of Marin phone number will be disconnected, Jeff Carlson can be reached at 415-694-7314 or jcarson@lighthouse-sf.org. Additionally, Jeff can always be reached through our main LightHouse Headquarters phone number: 415-431-1418. Jeff will connect you to the resources and support you need as well as referring you to training in Orientation and Mobility, Independent Living, Braille and Access Technology.

The LightHouse looks forward to 2121 as we connect with you virtually and eventually in person. Again, to stay connected, visit us at www.lighthouse-sf.org; visit our store at adaptations at www.adaptations.org (you can also call the store at 1-888-400-8933) and connect with Jeff Carlson at 415-694-7314. While you continue to be safe during the holiday season; wear a facial covering, socially distance, stay at home and reach out and give us a call. We all welcome 2021!
