What is accessible technology and how do we learn to use it? If you, a friend or family member are a person who is new to blindness or having low vision, or new to using access technology tools, this event is for you. We’ll discuss how you can use mainstream tools like smartphones, voice assistants, and computers, as well as a few specialized gadgets for reading books and recording information at the touch of a button. With a new iOS version comes new features and changes to the iOS experience, but what does this mean for access technology users? How do you customize your lock screen? Can you really unsend a text message? What are the bugs or fixes you should know about before or after updating your phone? We'll discuss the ups and the downs of iOS 16 and share our tips and tricks.October 25: Meet the Access Tech Team
Following our discussion in which we introduced access technology, lets take a look at the people behind the machines. Each trainer will discuss their favorite device or software that they teach, their favorite productivity tool, and their favorite app for entertainment. -

Whether you enjoy meditative movement, breath work and yoga or have a flair for dances from Bollywood o ballroom, bring your heart and style to this class and share your love in motion with your community. This open-ended dance class celebrates you as the expert on your body, inviting you to dance from a chair or take over the floor. We warm up with intention, explore improvisation techniques, try on each other's movement styles and even perform for each other. Let loose your curiosity and sense of play in a supportive space where you are welcome to experiment with the current LightHouse projects, or bring your own craft to work on alongside friends. No experience is necessary. Wear or bring something you don't mind getting dirty.
This October, we will continue exploring book structures such as map fold books, one page zines and stab stitch books along with other paper things that cam be opened such as origami boxes and envelopes.

Oct 14Get to know our block, heading left when leaving Lighthouse HQ. Let's meet at reception on the 10th floor then head out and explore a couple good spots to know. First, we will scope out Whole Foods and get to know the basic layout. Then, under the leadership of Volunteer Manager and Museums Maven, Allyson Ferrari, we will duck into Trinity Plaza right next door and take a look at the intriguing selection of sculpture throughout the space, much of which is tactile. Oct 15Calling all blind and low vision movie lovers of all ages to join us for our next “Reel Escape Audio Description Movie Club” gathering. This time around we gather on white cane day in October to watch the 2004 film, Ray, with audio description. A story about the life and career of the legendary rhythm and blues musician Ray Charles, from his humble beginnings in the South, where he went blind at age seven, to his meteoric rise to stardom during the 1950s and 1960s.
The program will be held Saturday, October 15 at 6:00 pm, with the movie starting shortly after all that join us for the event get a chance to say hello. Since the movie is 2 hours and 32 minutes, we will be sure to make space for and intermission and time after the film to share your thoughts about the movie. Since it is White Cane Day we will also make time to speak about our white canes and share any of our own favorite stories we have had with them.

What is white cane day? – White Cane Safety Day is a national observance in the United States, celebrated on October 15 of each year since 1964. The date is set aside to celebrate the achievements of people who are blind or have low vision and the important symbol of blindness and tool of independence, the white cane. Oct 22The Superfest Disability Film Festival features films from around the world celebrating disability culture by featuring work by and about people with disabilities.
Watch the films in person or on-demand virtually.
The first day of films take place at the Freight and Salvage at 2020 Addison St in Berkeley near the Downtown Berkley BART Station. After the first day of films, there will be community social time.
The second day of films take place at the Asian Art Museum at 200 Larkin St. in San Francisco, across from the main library and near the Civic Center BART Station. After the second day of films, stay around for a panel discussion featuring some of the makers of one of the featured films.
All films will have closed audio descriptions via the All4Access app.
