Sound & Space Workshop

Sound & Space Workshop

Apr 7

Are you prone to getting lost? Do you find yourself often asking friends and family members (or your local O&M instructor) to help you learn how to get to new places? Are you worried about how you will manage if your vision changes and you can no longer see to get around? Well you are in luck because LightHouse has the perfect workshop for you!

In this Sound & Space workshop, you will learn to use your hearing to make travel easier and more enjoyable regardless of your visual state. You will learn how to use sound to establish and maintain a straight line of travel, to determine how far away sounds are, and to recognize different types of indoor spaces. In addition, you will learn the basic principles of good spatial awareness, receive a personalized assessment of your spatial strengths and weaknesses, and learn tips for improving your overall spatial awareness.

Throughout the workshop, you will have a chance to practice using sound to help you map new spaces. Hearing can be successfully used alongside vision, so people with all levels of vision impairment are encouraged to consider attending. People with known or suspected hearing loss can often benefit from auditory training as well and are welcome to attend.

What should you expect? This will be a 6-hour workshop held at LightHouse Headquarters in San Francisco from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., including a 1-hour lunch break. Please plan to bring your own lunch; food will not be provided, but we will have space to eat together. The cost of the workshop is $165, space is limited to 3 students, and registration is required before the event. We accept cash, checks, and credit cards; partial scholarships may be available to San Francisco residents aged 55 and over. All payments are due before the day of the event. Clients of the Department of Rehabilitation or Veterans Administration should speak with their counselor to ask if payment is available. To register for this workshop, contact Briana Kusuma at bkusuma@lighthouse-sf.org or by phone at 415-694-7335.
