3:00 pm: Building a LightHouse Choir: Info Sessions3:00 pm: Building a LightHouse Choir: Info Sessions – Building a LightHouse Choir: Info Sessions "Ms. Maria, could you please sing with us, and be the director of the choir?" Maria Flamich is a Ph.D. Fulbright Scholar from Budapest, Hungary at the English Department of the University of California Berkeley. She conducts research on cultural representations of disability with Georgina Kleege and Susan Schweik. Maria's interest focuses mainly on music. She is a soprano, a choir director, and a concert organizer, for she believes that music is a powerful way of expressing blind people's often hidden value. She is generously offering to form a choir for the LightHouse community, and invites blind and sighted people to come and sing together. The only requirement is to love music! If you love singing, join us for an info session and make your voice heard! Your choice of two info sessions is available, either 3:00 or 6:00 p.m. (attendance at both is not necessary). Light refreshments will be served and we'll hear from Maria about her choir experience, cover logistics, answer your questions and get the singing started. Whether you knit for pleasure, distraction or just practical economics, or you’ve never done it before and want to give it a try, there’s always room for another loom. Learn, refine, or teach a skill that makes your gift-giving budget lighter weight or support a student-led altruistic project like knitting chemo caps, beanies for babies, lap blankets or other creative applications. 5:30 pm: LightHouse Choir5:30 pm: LightHouse Choir – LightHouse Choir "Ms. Maria, could you please sing with us, and be the director of the choir?" This was the question posed in Budapest to Maria Flamich when about fifteen students turned to her to lead them when the director left the choir and the School for the Blind. And this is how Maria took over the choir the students, most of whom she knew because she taught them English as a foreign language. Music was always an integral part of the lessons, as it is an integral part of Maria's life. Maria Flamich is a Ph.D. Fulbright Scholar from Budapest, Hungary now at the English Department of the University of California Berkeley. She conducts research on cultural representations of disability with professors Georgina Kleege and Susan Schweik. Maria's interest focuses mainly on music. She is a singer, a choir director and a concert organizer, and she believes that music is a powerful way of expressing blind people's often hidden value. Now Maria has just generously offered to spend time at LightHouse until around July, to form a choir for the LightHouse community and invites blind and sighted people to come and sing together. The LightHouse cordially invites both blind and sighted community members to come together and fill the LightHouse with song. The only requirement is to love music and Maria will guide us through the rest. If you love singing, join us for weekly practice and make your voice heard! And that also means it's time for 30% & Snowing, the cozy holiday alternative to your monthly networking meet-up with your blind working friends. We're going low-key at the Lighthouse high-rise; a more personal setting with basic nibblies and beverages available for your enjoyment. 4:00 pm: Dinner and Bingo4:00 pm: Dinner and Bingo – Dinner and Bingo Enjoy a community dinner and lots of rollicking bingo fun on the third Friday of each month at the LightHouse. RSVP by noon on the Tuesday prior and $7 covers your dinner (RSVP later or not at all and your dinner is $10). Braille and large print bingo cards make bingo accessible for everyone. Bring a handful or two of coins for small-change competitiveness … we play a couple of nickel games, several dimes games, and after dessert, one quarter gets you three games – good company – good food – good fun! The LightHouse is scent-free. Please abstain from wearing colognes, perfumes, or other scented products. Additionally, coffee must be securely lidded at all times and citrus should not be peeled on the premises. Thanks for supporting our efforts to respect chemical sensitivities!
