Events in July 2020
- LightHouse Krafters Korner Hangout
LightHouse Krafters Korner Hangout
Second Saturdays of each month
Did you know there's a national network of crafters who are blind or have low vision out there, meeting up all the time by email and phone, to share, learn, and teach crafts of all kinds? We’re excited to be partnering with the National Federation of the Blind (NFB) Krafters Division to connect you to all the new crafting skills you could possibly want with a community that is just as excited about it as you.
LightHouse’s Krafters Korner hangout is free and crafters of all skill levels are welcome. Get answers to your crafting questions and guidance in learning new skills such as loom knitting, needle knitting, crocheting, origami and more. If you wish to register for membership in the NFB Krafters Division, LightHouse will cover half of your annual membership dues. San Francisco residents would pay nothing, thanks to a generous grant from the San Francisco Department of Disability and Aging Services.
RSVP to Serena Olsen at firstname.lastname@example.org or 415-694-7316.
Want to find out more about the NFB Krafters Korner division before you join? Give it a try with these free perks:
- Free craft chat call every Monday at 4:30 p.m. Pacific
- One complimentary class of your choice
- Join the Krafters Korner listserv to connect with other crafters who are blind or have low vision via email.
- Join Krafters Korner on Facebook
With membership, you'll have access to unlimited Krafters Korner classes, access to the Krafters Korner Marketplace, and have a voice and a vote in the running of the division. You’ll also be able to learn, build, or even teach your skills.
- 30% & Growing, Virtual Edition
30% & Growing, Virtual Edition
Please note the schedule change to the 4th Thursday for this month only.
We’re a few months into this new COVID-19 employment landscape and each one of us in the 30% & Growing crew brings a different experience to the table. We’ve shared everything from the challenge of recognizing instability in our livelihood that necessitated an out-of-state move, to successful second-round interviews and placement in seemingly impossible times.
How has the employment game changed for people who are blind or have low vision in these unusual and challenging times? We’re going to gather some insight from our very own in-house experts on this very subject in July—the LightHouse Employment Immersion team will be our very special guests, so if you’re a veteran 30%er, an in-transition 30%er, or an aspiring 30%er to be, please join us for this very special edition of 30% & Growing to get your finger on the pulse of what’s new in employment for people who are blind or have low vision.
For Zoom access info, RSVP to Adult Program Coordinator Serena Olsen at email@example.com or 415-694-7316, then grab a bite to eat and your favorite beverage, and join the virtual networking party.
- Cards Against Humanity (online)
Cards Against Humanity (online)
Join in on sizzling hot fun with a side of ridiculous while we gather for a few hours of Cards Against Humanity (CAH) hosted by Bay Area Blind Mom. On the third Friday of the summer months, from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m., log onto RS Games for an adults-only card night. Grab your favorite beverage and join friends across the nation on the RS Game platform and a little Zoom convo.
You must be comfortable with, or willing to learn, both the Zoom and RS Games platform. Prior knowledge of how to play CAH is not necessary. Detailed instructions on how to play CAH on RS Games will be handled just prior to playing the game. For details on how to join the Zoom chat and the actual Cards Against Humanity game, you must be 18 years of age or older and RSVP to Adult Program Coordinator Serena Olsen for the game night password and Zoom access info: firstname.lastname@example.org or 415-694-7316.
Have burning questions? Here are some answers that might help.
Q: How do I download RS Games?
A: To download RS Games, visit http://www.rsgames.org/downloads.php and navigate to the download heading for the software appropriate to your preferred device.
Q: What type of device is necessary for playing?
A: Computers work best on the RS Games platform. However, with a little extra effort, smart phones do work.
Q: How will I know which game to join?
A: Select Cards Against Humanity from the list of games in the main menu of RS Games. Select join and find the game hosted by Bay Area Blind Mom. The password will be provided with Zoom access info.
Q: Why is there a Zoom part to the evening’s festivities.
A: Although RS Games has a voice chat option, it often makes glitches happen in the game. Being able to chat with friends on a separate platform such as Zoom makes for fun and frivolity. Simultaneously using both platforms make for an awesome time with friends.
The events for the upcoming week are read aloud on our event hotline every Friday, which can be accessed by calling (415)694-7325.
