Youth Extreme Recreation Adventure: Annual Family Ice Skating
Saturday, December 7, 1:30 p.m. - 3:30 p.m.During the 2019 and 2020 school year, the LightHouse Youth Program will be hosting monthly extreme recreation activities and adventures for youth who are blind or have low vision. Those that sign up for these monthly outings will have opportunities to make new friends, meet mentors and develop life skills that will help them be successful in other aspects of life - all while enjoying the wonderful recreation options that the Bay Area and surrounding areas has to offer.In December the LightHouse Youth Program invites all families with at least one person that is blind or has low vision to join us for our annual family ice skating gathering. Families will gather at the LightHouse Headquarters at 1:30 p.m. before the short walk over to The Winter Park Ice Rink at Civic Center. Once at the ice rink families will get the chance to explore the ice with other friends from the LightHouse community.  After we have had our fill of skating, students and their families will have time to hang out and warmup over hot coco with their LightHouse friends.

Who: Families with at least one family member who is blind or has low vision
What: Family Ice Skating with LightHouse
When: 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday, December 7th
Where: Meet at the LightHouse headquarters at 1155 Market St. and walk over to The Winter Park Ice Rink at Civic Center
Cost: Special price of $10 per person for skates, rink admission fee and hot chocolate for those that RSVP before 9:00 a.m. Thursday, December 5. Guests that RSVP after this will need to purchase regularly priced tickets at the box office or online.

Unite, Serve, and Celebrate: A Weekend of Community and Self Improvement

In December, join the LightHouse Youth Employment Series, YES, workshop focusing on the importance and impact of volunteerism and collaboration as the community unite to provide service and celebrate. Youth will have the opportunity to gain imperative volunteer experience, increase their confidence through community service, as well as personally grow. This is an empowering weekend to improve yourself and your community all while celebrating and connecting with blind and low vision peers and mentors. YES workshops are monthly weekend-long learning experiences emphasizing the vocational enrichment of low vision and blind youth, increasing and providing access to a multifaceted array of mentorship, employment readiness skills, and alternative accessible techniques.

The YES Workshop in December will provide students with the opportunity to engage in hands-on volunteer projects, understand the importance of community building, as well as organize a community holiday celebration. The weekend is spent learning from blind and low vision mentors in a supportive atmosphere to further encourage youth to explore and achieve their individualized and professional aspirations.

Workshop Learning Objectives:
1. Participants will be engaged in different volunteer and community involvement opportunities as they gain invaluable insights from hands-on experiences in different fields.
2. Youth will learn how service and altruism can positively impact the community, enrich their lived experiences, as well as strengthen their resume and college and scholarship applications.
3. Transitional age youth will elevate their confidence and awareness through community building as they take part in the planning, preparation, and hosting of a community celebration.
4. The over-night nature of the YES workshop provide opportunities for students to refine their workplace readiness soft skills including effective social and professional communication and independent living all while building community with their blind and low vision peers.

1. Contact your Department of Rehabilitation counselor to discuss workshop attendance and authorization.
2. Confirm attendance with Ann Wai-Yee Kwong, Transition Program Specialist, by email at youth@lighthouse-sf.org or by phone at 415-694-7328.

Youth Extreme Recreation Adventure: Holiday Festive and Gift Exchange

During the 2019 and 2020 school year, the LightHouse Youth Program will be hosting monthly recreation activities and adventures for youth that are blind or who are visually impaired. In December the YES program will be hosting the LightHouse Annual holiday gathering. Like in years past, students will get a chance to exchange gifts in our annual White Elephant Gift Exchange as well as take part in a cookie decorating challenge with blind and visually impaired friends and mentors from all over the Bay Area. Pizza will be provided for those that RSVP before Wednesday, December 11.

Who: Students that are blind or who are visually impaired and are currently attending high school
What: Annual Youth Program Holiday Gathering including holiday cookie decorating and White Elephant Gift Exchange
When: Saturday December 14, 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
Where: LightHouse Headquarters @ 11th floor of 1155 Market St. San Francisco
Waiver: Each participant must complete a LightHouse intake process if they have not done so for a previous activity with LightHouse
Things to bring: one wrapped gift whose value does not exceed $10.00 for gift exchange
RSVP: with any dietary restrictions or food allergies before 9:00 a.m. Wednesday, December 11. This will help LightHouse staff insure that we have enough program supplies.
