Nov 1Sterling Adaptives, who provide the latest in access technology products for people who are blind, low vision or have other disabilities, is providing a free demonstration of two OrCam products on November 1 in partnership with the LightHouse Access Technology department.
The products demonstrated will be the OrCam MyEye 2 and the OrCam Read, both of which are access technology devices which access print using text-to-speech and Voice Assistant technology.
OrCam MyEye 2
This is a wearable device that attaches to glasses. It’s activated by pointing gestures or by following the wearer’s gaze and reads printed and digital text aloud. It also helps with navigation and object recognition. It includes interactive reading, which allows the wearer to do a voice search for specific text or assist with identification of objects.

OrCam Read
This handheld device reads any printed or digital text at the push of a button. User can start reading from any point on a specific page, and also connect to Bluetooth or wired headphones.

Join Kacie Cappello and Fernando Macias from the Access Technology department, and O&M Specialist extraordinaire, Katt Jones, to explore the tools and techniques for navigating safely and confidently through our opening, changing world. We’ll discuss how native iPhone functionality like Siri and the Compass app can help you orient to your surroundings. You will learn route-planning strategies using Apple Maps and Google Maps, and how to get public transportation information from apps like Moovit and LiveBart. You will hear accessible apps like Microsoft Soundscape in action, and try features out for yourself. Whether you’re rediscovering your favorite coffeeshop, or preparing for your next great adventure, you’ll be ready to boldly go where you’ve always wanted to go!

This is a virtual class to be attended via the Zoom platform. Please, if possible, attend the Zoom meeting on a separate device than your iPhone, so the phone can be used for in-class activities.
Course Prerequisites
To participate and fully benefit from this class, students must:
- Live in San Mateo, San Francisco, Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin or Humboldt county.
- Have an iPhone with up-to-date software and the ability to download apps.
- Be comfortable independently exploring new iPhone apps.
- Be comfortable using your phone and its accessibility features, (VoiceOver, Zoom, etc), to access information on the screen.
- Be comfortable using your phone in different environments and in all lighting conditions.
- Be comfortable listening to and processing multiple sources of audio feedback.
- Be comfortable using the phone outdoors to obtain information about your environment while traveling.
Note: After RSVP-ing, one of the class instructors will be in touch with a brief pre-course screener call. This step is required prior to enrollment.

Nov 10The Asian Art Museum has invited us to experience another fabulous collection of happenings, starting with a descriptive tour and a bit of art making followed by some social time and refreshment and concluding with a performance fusing classical and hip hop together.
The exhibit we will visit sounds enticing: Into View: Bernice Bing celebrates the museum’s acquisition of 20 paintings and works on paper that shine a light on an important local Asian American artist who has only recently gained broad recognition for her achievements. These works reveal the evolution of Bing’s remarkable practice, from paintings of the 1950s and 1960s that straddle Abstract Expressionism and figuration to work from the 1980s and 1990s that explores a synthesis of Zen calligraphy and Western abstraction.
The group performing later in the evening is bound to delight Ensemble Mik Nawooj’s Hip-Hop Orchestra samples from across classical genres, sharing original music in an underground party setting like the New York scene that birthed hip-hop.

Write about a challenge you’ve faced and how facing that challenge transformed you. Discover your own determination and confidence. People who are confident in themselves are better equipped to help others.
This workshop takes places at LightHouse's Enchanted Hills Camp at 3410 Mt Veeder Rd. in Napa.
Cost: $200 for the weekend. Thanks to the San Francisco Department of Disability and Aging Services for providing additional funding for this program.

Nov 11LightHouse’s Rehabilitation Services and Media and Accessible Design departments are teaming up to present this free course on learning to read tactile maps.
This course is made possible thanks to a grant from the Federal Transportation Administration.
Prerequisites:
- You must be an intermediate Braille reader
- You must be aged 16 or up
In addition to the training, each student will take home free TMAPs of their residential area, one of the LightHouse San Francisco area at 1155 Market, as well as a tactile map of the Civic Center BART Station.
LightHouse Braille Instructor, Divina Carlson, and Senior Accessible Media and Braille Specialist, Frank Welte, along with tactile map aficionado, Jerry Kuns, will be facilitating this introductory training in the practical use of TMAP, tactile maps and tactile BART maps for Bay Area travelers. It must be noted that Jerry states he isn’t happier than when he has a good cappuccino in one hand and a tactile map in the other!
What will you learn?
- Discover the value of tactile maps
- Developing systematic strategies in your approach to exploration of tactile maps
- Gaining deeper understanding of what a tactile map presents such as: symbols, line types, labels and distance, direction and environmental features.
- Tactile discrimination techniques for map reading
- Greater orientation to new environments
- How could you have lived without tactile maps? How do I order more maps?

In your email, please provide Briana your full name, phone number and your residential address, so that we can produce your home map prior to the training.

Nov 16Goalball is a game created for blind veterans. In a goalball match, participants compete in teams of three, and try to throw a ball that has bells embedded in it into the opponents' goal.
Bay Area Outreach goalball practice is a fun way to get exercise and meet new people. The goalball practice is designed for all ages and experience levels and is free-of-charge. If you do not have your own Goalball equipment, we can provide you with elbow pads, knee pads, as well as eye shades.
For this outing, we will meet at LightHouse San Francisco at 1155 Market and head over to the gym in Berkeley as a group. The gym is located at 2100 Browning St. in Berkeley.
Please note: Proof of full vaccination is required.

Nov 19This evening of work features preview excerpts from three new works by Jess Curtis, and Beyond Gravity artists Silk Worm, and jose e. abad. One work of note features LH student, Tiffany Taylor and other blind artists:
Into The Dark, a new ensemble work instigated by Jess Curtis in collaboration with a diverse ensemble of Blind, Low Vision and Sighted performers, addresses the physical, subconscious, and literal effects of western culture’s binary mythologizing of darkness and light.
This haptic experience starts at 7:00pm, an hour prior to show time. It takes place at CounterPulse located on Ohlone territory at 80 Turk Street. Tickets are sliding scale from $10 to $50 and you can choose your level when you reserve your tickets at https://counterpulse.secure.force.com/ticket/#/instances/a0F4y00000ZTfuKEAT. Nov 27Discover the sport of rock-climbing with the always fun and supportive volunteers of ParaCliffHangers. There is no better way to get moving and stay active, than hanging off the side of a rock wall. All ages and skill levels are welcome, and no prior experience is needed. Equipment can be rented upon arriving for $5.
We will be meeting at Lighthouse HQ at 11:00 am the day of and heading over on BART as a group. The event starts at noon.
The cost is $10.

Nov 29The LightHouse will host author M. Leona Godin at our November 29th online discussion of Godin’s non-fiction book, There Plant Eyes: A Personal and Cultural History of Blindness
From Homer to Helen Keller, from Dune to Stevie Wonder, from the invention of Braille to the science of echolocation, M. Leona Godin explores the fascinating history of blindness, interweaving it with her own story of gradually losing her sight. There Plant Eyes probes the ways in which blindness has shaped our ocularcentric culture, challenging deeply ingrained ideas about what it means to be “blind.” For millennia, blindness has been used to signify such things as thoughtlessness (“blind faith”), irrationality (“blind rage”), and unconsciousness (“blind evolution”). But at the same time, blind people have been othered as the recipients of special powers as compensation for lost sight (from the poetic gifts of John Milton to the heightened senses of the comic book hero Daredevil). “[A] thought-provoking mixture of criticism, memoir, and advocacy.” —The New Yorker
Leona Godin is a writer, performer, and educator who is blind. Her writing has appeared in The New York Times; Playboy; O, The Oprah Magazine; and Catapult, where she writes the column, “A Blind Writer’s Notebook.” She was a 2019 Logan Nonfiction Fellow and has written and produced two theatrical productions: The Star of Happiness, based on Helen Keller’s time performing on vaudeville, and The Spectator & the Blind Man, about the invention of Braille.
