Jun 1The Museum of Craft and Design, will be pulling up in their Mobile Art Studio to join us for two sessions of our "Create in Community " art class, to offer art activations inspired by their upcoming exhibits. Meet on the 11th floor in the craft room at LightHouse San Francisco headquarters to create with new materials, unpack thought-provoking prompts and spark vibrant conversation with guest artists from a fabulous local arts institution.
Sessions stem from work with the view that we will revisit that work later in June.
The Mobile Art Studio features a collection of works showcasing the art as a means of coping with changes in the Bay Area and an artist's concept of "Concrete Journals".

Jun 3At the end of the school year, filled with hopefully more ups then downs, it’s time to kick off summer in a fun way with your blind and low vision friends from the LightHouse. Join us on June 3 for our next in person adventure with the LightHouse’s Youth Program as we head to Sausalito for a kayaking day trip with our friends and guides from Environmental Travel Companions (ETC). In addition to experienced guides leading us on our adventure, the trip will also include a picnic lunch and time to catch up with your LightHouse and EHC friends. The adventure will start in Sausalito and will run from 9:30 am to 3:00 pm. The trip is intended for all kayaking skill levels and ETC strives to make their trips accessible for all.

Jun 3Crip Ecstasy is an immersive nightlife experience that centers accessibility from the ground up. Working with a cast of disabled and non-disabled performance artists, DJs, ASL interpreters and Audio Describers, this installation will transform San Francisco’s CounterPulse Theater into an environment where multiple forms of access intersect to conjure a new blueprint for what a club space can be.
Accessibility: ASL Interpretation, Audio Description, Access Tour/Touch Tour/Haptic Tour, Live-captioned sound descriptions for music, chill-out space, access doulas, multiple seating options, pillows & daybeds across the party space, ADA accessible venue.
The pre-show haptic tour is at 7:15 pm and the event beings at 8:00 pm.
The theater is located at 80 Turk St. in San Francisco.

Jun 5Vision is a peer-led drop-in support group that runs on a 12-week cycle of topics based on Hannah Fairbairn’s 2019 book, “When You Can't Believe Your Eyes: Vision Loss and Personal Recovery”. On the first and third Mondays of the month, we meet to discuss different topics and share our experiences, thoughts, and knowledge. We are people with similar experiences who genuinely want to support one another in all aspects of living independently with our changing vision.

Jun 6The San Francisco Museum of Craft and Design continues its ongoing partnership LightHouse with an invitation to visit its latest exhibits:
FIGHT AND FLIGHT: CRAFTING A BAY AREA LIFE - A timely examination of the Bay Area arts ecosystem featuring 23 local artists who, despite the many crises of our times, continue to call the Bay Area a creative home.
CONCRETE JOURNALS: ANNE HICKS SIBERELL - Drawing inspiration from ancient cuneiform tablets, Siberell commits her diaristic collages to concrete–a literal and figurative manner of preserving the past.
After we tour the exhibitions, complete with descriptive details and haptic opportunities, we are invited to spend the last twenty to thirty minutes experiencing an art activation process inspired by one of the exhibitions.

Jun 17BART is starting a book club! The first book is Hua Hsu’s Stay True, a bracing coming-of-age story set in 1990s Berkeley.
BART riders will gather for a train read-in that starts at Rockridge Station and end at Glen Park Station. They'll gather in the first car of the train to meet fellow riders, discuss the book, and read together. Expect BART and book-themed giveaways!

It will also address professionalism including: how to submit your work, how to pitch ideas to editors, and what it takes to have a writing career. Each month a visiting author will give students an overview of the genre, give an assignment for the following week, and provide spoken feedback on a portion of the work as well as suggestions for next steps.

Jun 23LightHouse is partnering with the Regional Mapping and Wayfinding Project to host an online community workshop on June 23 from 12:45 pm to 3:45 pm. We’d love to hear from community members who are blind, visually impaired, low-income, and people of color who use public transit or could be impacted by a transportation project.
What is the workshop all about?
As part of the Bay Area Transit Transformation Action Plan the Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC) and other stakeholders are committed to a range of projects for public transit’s post-pandemic recovery and long-term improvement. One of the actions identified was to “Fund and finalize regional mapping and wayfinding standards for application across all operator service areas”. This intends to ensure transit services are easier to navigate and more convenient for both new and existing riders.
Now is the time for our communities’ voices to be heard and for us to help shape the future of this work.
Individuals or households can sign up for this three-hour workshop hosted over the Zoom or phone, and each person who participates in the session is paid $100 via Visa gift card.
Please plan to be available for the entire three hours scheduled for the workshop. There will be a break during the workshop. This workshop has a maximum of 20 participants, and we will have a waitlist for last-minute cancellations.

Hang out with friends, enjoy refreshments, find a quiet place to relax away from the crowds and play some favorite rainbow games including Braille Uno and tactile Twister. In addition, volunteers will be available for guides and visual interpretation to visit the Pride Festival at Civic Center, which will have concerts, vendors, and more.

Jun 29Bring your giggles and wiggles to Little Learners weekly Zoom Playgroup, Thursdays from 9:30am - 10:15am. Enjoy fun activities with your little one, ages 0-6, while learning strategies to support your child's visual, sensory, motor and concept development. Connect with other families who understand and share your experience raising a child who is blind, has low vision, or Cortical Visual Impairment (CVI). Weekly activities are designed to be accessible for all, and to build upon monthly themes that you can integrate into your family routines. All are welcome!
