Sep 1This class runs Fridays in September from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm
“Meet me in the kitchen” is a five-week course designed to empower LightHouse students with the non-visual techniques needed to prepare and present delicious meals independently. This course is created and taught by Bobbi Pompey, an Independent Living Skills Specialist with a passion for cooking and teaching. Each week you will learn non-visual kitchen skills, general cooking tips and tricks, and prepare a snack or meal.
Skills You Will Learn Include:
Organizing, labeling, and preparing your kitchen and workspace
Measuring wet and dry ingredients
Using knives, kitchen appliances, blindness/low vision gadgets and other “tools of the trade”
Understanding how to build flavor profiles, decipher lingo used in recipes, and determine the doneness of food

Course Schedule:
Session 1: September 1 - Welcome and Course Overview
This session will include staff/student introductions, a course overview, a tour of the kitchen, and an introduction to basic techniques for navigating a kitchen. Class will conclude with a lesson on pouring and spreading and the preparation of a snack.Session 2: September - Cracking the Code
By the end of this session, you will understand how to decipher common recipe lingo, develop delicious flavor profiles with spices stock a pantry with basic staples, and shop for groceries independently. Techniques for measuring will be used to create a spice rub and/or basic sauce.Session 3: September 15 - Getting the Job Done
Knife skills are the main focus of this session. Students will make a simple one-pot soup and learn to determine when food is done.Session 4: September 22 - Learning to Spin All the Plates
This class marks the transition into the more advanced portion of the course. Labeling, organizing, blindness devices, kitchen gadgets, and the use of small appliances will be covered as ways to add efficiency to meal preparation. You will prepare a three part meal during this session.Session 5: September 29 - Putting On the Finishing Touches
Taking all the skills of previous classes you will learn to; serve themselves, serve others, set a table, decorate and/or garnish a meal.This course takes place at LightHouse San Francisco at 1155 Market St. 10th Floor.

The group is appropriate for beginners and advanced practitioners, and instruction is provided in all aspects of the practice. Instructor Jeffrey Schneider has more than 40 years of meditation and teaching experience. It is a virtual class using the Zoom platform—everyone is welcome as little or often as they like. Dial in, find a comfo rtable position, breathe deeply, clear your head, and de-stress.

We'll be embarking on an unforgettable journey into the 1980s with the popular Netflix series Stranger Things. This captivating show revolves around a group of kids in a small town, facing supernatural mysteries, government conspiracies, and the enigmatic powers of a mysterious girl with psychokinetic abilities.
Every Thursday evening at 8:00 pm, join us via Zoom to watch the latest episode of Stranger Things and connect with your LightHouse and EHC friends. It's a fantastic opportunity to immerse yourself in a world of excitement and adventure while enjoying the company of like-minded peers.

Sep 8 – Sep 9As we make our way into fall, the LightHouse invites students of all ages to join us for our next adventure with Environmental Traveling Companions (ETC). This time, we head east to the South Fork of the American River for an overnight campout and whitewater rafting adventure with your blind and low-vision friends.
Our trip will depart from the Ed Roberts Campus in Berkeley, on Friday, September 8 at 2:00 pm. We will head up to the ETC Camp in Lotus California where we will make dinner as a group and enjoy an evening under the stars. The next morning after we make breakfast, our day-long paddle will begin. After a fun day on the water led by our experienced ETC Guides, our group will make the trip back to Ed Roberts Campus in Berkely in the evening. This trip is open for youth and adults ages 14 and up and is $150.00 per participant. This includes, rafting equipment, overnight campout, transportation to the rafting site, and meals throughout the adventure.
Who: Youth and Adults who are blind or have low vision, ages 14 and up
What: Whitewater Rafting and Overnight Campout
When: Depart from the Ed Roberts Campus at 3075 Adeline St. in Berkeley at 2:00 pm Friday, September 9, and return to the same space 8:00 pm Saturday, September 9.
Where: South Fork of the American River and ETC’s Overnight Camp located in Lotus CA
Waiver: Each participant must complete and submit both a LightHouse and Environmental Travel Companions form
Cost: The cost of the event is $150.00 per participant. This fee includes, rafting equipment, overnight campout, transportation to the rafting site, meals and snack through the adventure. Spots will only be reserved once payment and the two signed waivers are received.
Transportation: round trip shuttle for this outing from the Ed Roberts Campus is available for those that request a space when they RSVP. Sep 14Members of the public are invited to attend the Thursday, September 14 meeting of the Board of Directors of San Francisco’s LightHouse for the Blind and Visually Impaired. This meeting will be a hybrid meeting and runs from 5:30 pm to 9:00 pm Pacific.
30 minutes will be reserved for public comment and members of the public will have up to three minutes to comment. If you would like to reserve a slot to speak, please complete the LightHouse Public Comment and RSVP Sign Up form. Please submit your comments as far in advance as possible. Comments must be received before noon Pacific on Wednesday, September 13 to be included in the agenda.
If you wish to attend this meeting in person, it will be held at LightHouse San Francisco headquarters at 1155 Market St. 10th Floor, San Francisco. Get directions to LightHouse San Francisco.

“Meet me in the kitchen” is a five-week course designed to empower LightHouse students with the non-visual techniques needed to prepare and present delicious meals independently. This course is created and taught by Bobbi Pompey, an Independent Living Skills Specialist with a passion for cooking and teaching. Each week you will learn non-visual kitchen skills, general cooking tips and tricks, and prepare a snack or meal.
Skills You Will Learn Include:
Organizing, labeling, and preparing your kitchen and workspace
Measuring wet and dry ingredients
Using knives, kitchen appliances, blindness/low vision gadgets and other “tools of the trade”
Understanding how to build flavor profiles, decipher lingo used in recipes, and determine the doneness of food

This session will include staff/student introductions, a course overview, a tour of the kitchen, and an introduction to basic techniques for navigating a kitchen. Class will conclude with a lesson on pouring and spreading and the preparation of a snack.Session 2: September - Cracking the Code
By the end of this session, you will understand how to decipher common recipe lingo, develop delicious flavor profiles with spices stock a pantry with basic staples, and shop for groceries independently. Techniques for measuring will be used to create a spice rub and/or basic sauce.Session 3: September 15 - Getting the Job Done
Knife skills are the main focus of this session. Students will make a simple one-pot soup and learn to determine when food is done.Session 4: September 22 - Learning to Spin All the Plates
This class marks the transition into the more advanced portion of the course. Labeling, organizing, blindness devices, kitchen gadgets, and the use of small appliances will be covered as ways to add efficiency to meal preparation. For our first of six salons, we will be treated to the vibrant Latin Jazz of Jorge Ellington and the Esencia Latin Jazz Ensemble. Plus, warm up for the main act with a curated selection of five five-minute works by blind and disabled performers, ranging from spoken word and comedy to music and movement.
About Our Headliner:
Jorge Ellington is a local musician, singer and song writer of the Esencia Latin Jazz Ensemble. The band was started in 1978. The original band consisted of 14 members and was called Esentia, then Orq Esencia. The band has evolved through the years undergoing changes in composition and name.Today, the band now called The Esencia Latin Jazz Ensemble, is a smaller version of the original orchestra. The band led by Jorge Ellington, has shared the stage with many performers including Celia Cruz, El Gran Combo, Tito Puente, Willie Colon, Hector Lavoe, La Lupe, and many more. The group has performed at many venues locally and abroad.
Jorge Ellington and his band have recorded and released 2 albums Esencia and Fuerza Positiva. They are currently working on a third album.

Blind Gamer Meetup: A Conversation and Demonstration of Accessible Video Gaming (in-person)

Sep 30Over the years, video gaming has continued to grow even more popular, quickly becoming a part of everyday society. However, for those that are blind or have low vision, many of these games have had very limited accessibility features for the visual aspects of the games.
In recent years SONY, other large video gaming platforms and the studios that create the hugely popular games have made progress in adding features that can help those that are blind or have low vision gain access to the latest games. To help our community learn about what is new in accessible gaming and allow a space for them to connect with peers, the LightHouse Youth Program would like to invite you to our first ever Blind Gamer Meet-up.
Join us for an inclusive and exciting gaming gathering designed for individuals of all ages who are blind or have low vision. The agenda promises an enriching experience, starting with engaging conversations and captivating demonstrations of Accessible Video Gaming. Connect with fellow gamers and share your passion for gaming during a delightful lunch gathering. Then, get ready to embark on a thrilling adventure of video game exploration with your peers where we take turns playing popular games with accessibility features turned on. Don't miss out on this unique opportunity to connect with like-minded individuals and immerse yourself in the world of accessible video games!
Parents please note: Some of the games we will be demonstrating and talking about are designed for an older audience. Youth that are under 18 years old may only join our event with parent or guardian permission.
