There IS a job market! Job seekers who are blind and have low vision are in demand to work remotely. Let LightHouse support you on your pathway to employment in these challenging times.

Our award-winning Employment Immersion program is now available virtually. Now is the time to join us via the Zoom conferencing platform. The program begins the first Monday of every month and runs each weekday. This comprehensive month-long training is specifically designed for people who are blind and have low vision. We are committed to providing group and individual guidance from the fundamentals of job search, to the complexities of disclosure of one’s disability with pride and confidence, to instruction on job search techniques, to honing interview skills. Most importantly, this program focuses on the participant’s individual job goals.

Navigation with Mobile GPS Apps

Navigation with Mobile GPS Apps

Interested in learning more about how GPS apps can support O&M travel? Orientation and Mobility Specialists from LightHouse for the Blind will introduce participants to multiple GPS apps during the four-session course. Participants will become familiar with features in Soundscape, Apple Maps, and Google Maps and learn how it can be integrated into regular travel.

Classes will be taught via Zoom from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. on the following dates:
Tuesday, June 15
Thursday, June 17
Tuesday, June 22
Thursday, June 24

This course is for DOR students with intermediate to advance iPhone skills who are interested in developing the navigation skills needed to retain or gain employment. Orientation & Mobility: Navigation with Mobile GPS Apps

LightHouse Orientation & Mobility Specialists, Marie Trudell and Katt Jones will teach this four-session GPS Navigation course on Zoom introducing iPhone using students to foundational GPS concepts, app features, and problem-solving strategies. Students will learn and explore the function and features of Soundscape, Apple and Google Maps and practice identifying destinations, places of interest, and landmarks. The class will culminate in a GPS App Scavenger Hunt.

Who can benefit from this eight hour course?

  • People who travel independently to work, school, and in life and would like to increase existing orientation and navigation skills
  • iPhone users with an intermediate to advanced level of technology skills who have a strong use of Zoom or VoiceOver

The fee for this course is $330 and is limited to eight participants. This course may be supported by the Department of Rehabilitation with approval and authorizations (individuals must first contact their counselors). Limited scholarships are available for eligible students.

The class runs June 15, 17, 22 & 24 from 3:30 pm to 5:30 pm.
