Our always popular Sensing the Seasons Nature Education retreat returns to Enchanted Hills Camp at 3410 Mt Veeder Rd. in Napa. This session is open to blind and low vision high school students and recent high school graduates. This time around, we’ll focus on how fall effects the plants, animals, and landscape of the camp and how we sense these changes.  From our taste, to smell and even how things feel, fall brings many changes to camp. You’ll learn not only how to sense the changes, but also why they happen.

Cost: $50 for transportation. Thanks to the San Francisco Department of Disability and Aging Services for providing additional funding for this program.

Transportation 

Round-trip transportation to EHC will be provided from the Ed Roberts Campus at 3075 Adeline St. in Berkeley. The shuttle to EHC departs at 1:00 pm on November 11 and returns to Ed Roberts Campus at 1:00 pm on November 13.

LightHouse Transition Programs is excited to announce the return of our YES (Youth Employment Services) in-person workshops! We will be launching the first gathering this November at beautiful Enchanted Hills Camp, where students will have opportunities to learn, meet mentors, and enjoy the surrounding nature with new and old friends.

Each YES workshop is focused on themes valuable to the college/employment preparedness experience – this month we will be discussing all things advocacy. From practice on how to advocate with professors, employers and the community, to situations that require advocacy, and organizations that can help in these processes, students will finish the weekend with a toolkit of new ideas, understandings, and connections to help in future experiences.

YES workshops are monthly weekend-long learning experiences for youth and young adults who are enthusiastic about realizing their dream careers, emphasizing the vocational enrichment of low vision and blind youth, providing access to a multifaceted array of mentorship, employment readiness skills, and alternative accessible techniques. Each YES workshop focuses on a specific theme and offers an array of self-advocacy, assistive technology, living skills, and soft skills curricula empowering students to strive toward future employment or post-secondary educational success. The weekend is spent learning from blind and low vision mentors, connecting with blind and low vision peers, and engaging in creative hands-on activities which further support youth to explore and achieve their individualized and professional goals.

Learning Objectives:

1: Students will hear from professionals and mentors regarding advocacy resources such as blindness organizations and disability student services, and will have opportunities to ask questions and seek advice.

2: Participants will have opportunities to practice their advocacy skills during a series of interactive activities. They will receive support and advice from peers and mentors as they work towards gaining confidence facing new and unfamiliar situations.

3: By holding this workshop at Enchanted Hills Camp, students will be able to interact with a variety of blind and low-vision mentors, participate in large group team-building social activities, and hone mobility skills while exploring in a safe and supportive environment.

4: The over-night nature of the YES workshop provides opportunities for students to refine their workplace readiness soft skills including effective social and professional communication and independent living all while building community with their blind and low vision peers and mentors.
