This course is created and taught by Bobbi Pompey, an Independent Living Skills Specialist with a passion for cooking and teaching. Each week you will learn non-visual kitchen skills, general cooking tips and tricks, and prepare a snack or meal. (All day): 2023 Rafting and Overnight Campout with ETC (in-person)(All day): 2023 Rafting and Overnight Campout with ETC (in-person) (All day) As we make our way into fall, the LightHouse invites students of all ages to join us for our next adventure with Environmental Traveling Companions (ETC). This time, we head east to the South Fork of the American River for an overnight campout and whitewater rafting adventure with your blind and low-vision friends. Our trip will depart from the Ed Roberts Campus in Berkeley, on Friday, September 8 at 2:00 pm. We will head up to the ETC Camp in Lotus California where we will make dinner as a group and enjoy an evening under the stars. The next morning after we make breakfast, our day-long paddle will begin. After a fun day on the water led by our experienced ETC Guides, our group will make the trip back to Ed Roberts Campus in Berkely in the evening. This trip is open for youth and adults ages 14 and up and is $150.00 per participant. This includes, rafting equipment, overnight campout, transportation to the rafting site, and meals throughout the adventure. Plus, warm up for the main act with a curated selection of five five-minute works by blind and disabled performers, ranging from spoken word and comedy to music and movement. About Our Headliner: Today, the band now called The Esencia Latin Jazz Ensemble, is a smaller version of the original orchestra. The band led by Jorge Ellington, has shared the stage with many performers including Celia Cruz, El Gran Combo, Tito Puente, Willie Colon, Hector Lavoe, La Lupe, and many more. The group has performed at many venues locally and abroad. Jorge Ellington and his band have recorded and released 2 albums Esencia and Fuerza Positiva. They are currently working on a third album. Warm-Up Acts: Plus, an accessible art display. Before and during the performance and while you enjoy some refreshment and good company, check out the work of blind photographer, Ted Tekachi whose work was displayed in the building lobby before and during the pandemic. However, for those that are blind or have low vision, many of these games have had very limited accessibility features for the visual aspects of the games. In recent years SONY, other large video gaming platforms and the studios that create the hugely popular games have made progress in adding features that can help those that are blind or have low vision gain access to the latest games. To help our community learn about what is new in accessible gaming and allow a space for them to connect with peers, the LightHouse Youth Program would like to invite you to our first ever Blind Gamer Meet-up. Join us for an inclusive and exciting gaming gathering designed for individuals of all ages who are blind or have low vision. The agenda promises an enriching experience, starting with engaging conversations and captivating demonstrations of Accessible Video Gaming. Connect with fellow gamers and share your passion for gaming during a delightful lunch gathering. Then, get ready to embark on a thrilling adventure of video game exploration with your peers where we take turns playing popular games with accessibility features turned on.
