LightHouse MAD Lab Provides Tactile BART Station Maps

Back in 2010, LightHouse’s Media and Accessible Design Lab (MAD Lab) set out to create accessible tactile and Braille maps of Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) train stations. After four years of hard work and collaboration between our accessible designers and our affiliates at BART, MAD Lab produced several accessible and detailed views of each and every BART station, totaling over 150 maps! These accessible maps have become an incredibly useful resource for blind and low vision BART patrons, as well as an ideal learning material for Orientation & Mobility instructors teaching map reading and wayfinding.
But a lot has changed since 2014. Since then, 18 stations have been renovated and three new destinations in Warm Springs, Milpitas, and Berryessa have been added to BART routes, as well as the construction of the Salesforce Transit Center in San Francisco. So, back to work our accessible designers went—creating and updating our evolving collection of transit station maps.
MAD Lab wants to ensure all our customers have access to the latest BART maps. In doing so, we are offering free accessible transit maps to Bay Area residents until the end of 2022!

Each tactile station map has Braille and large print labels with full color graphics and contains the following:

  • A map key listing the symbols used on the maps
  • A street level view showing the station surrounded by bus stops, taxi stands, loading zones, parking areas and adjacent streets
  • A concourse view showing station entrances, fare machines, fare gates, station agent booths and restrooms
  • A platform view showing the platform with benches and the location of trackways
  • Also, all views show stairways, escalators and elevators connecting the various levels of each station

Now is the perfect time to update your collection of BART maps or start one! To receive your free tactile station amps, complete the BART Map Request Form today and specify which maps you would like. You may select up to five free maps.
