LightHouse Offers Enchanted Hills Kitchen Training with Future Employment in Mind

The LightHouse has begun offering short-term employment opportunities in our Enchanted Hills Camp kitchen. These are prep-person positions and are funded through the Department of Rehabilitation’s Immersion Services. The prep-person supports the Enchanted Hills head cook and kitchen staff in preparing meals and setting up meal service. Trainees will first pass an online assessment and then obtain enough real-life work experience in a commercial kitchen for them to qualify for further study and placement through the Department of Rehabilitation Business Enterprise Program.

Right now we have two young blind adults, 18-year-old Steffan Alvarez and 20-year-old Travis Erdmann, employed as kitchen prep people. They are getting good training and enjoying monetary compensation for their labor. Travis Erdmann explained, “I help prepare food for the dinner meal, and set up the dining area for campers and staff. I like getting my paycheck; I put half in my savings and half in my checking!”

Blind or visually impaired people working with the Department of Rehabilitation are eligible to apply for these jobs. If you are interested in more information as future openings for kitchen training emerge, please contact Debbie Bacon in Rehabilitation Services at 415-694-7357 or dbacon@lighthouse-sf.org.
