CFILC presents What Can You Do? and Disability Mentoring Day

CFILC salutes October as Disability Employment Awareness Month!

Originating by proclamation of President Truman in 1945, Disability Awareness began as a week-long effort to assist disabled American Veterans. It has been expanded in scope to include all persons with disabilities in order to support their efforts to achieve equal opportunity in employment and to highlight their talent, potential and contributions in the workplace. Take Action

This year several national organizations including the American Association of People with Disabilities have launched the “What Can YOU Do?” Campaign to coincide with Disability Awareness Month. The campaign provides attention, resources and strategies to promote positive employment outcomes for people with disabilities by assisting them in their career development and encouraging employers and others to recognize the value they bring to the workplace. Noting that, “In business, the investment that drives innovation is talent,” the campaign website features tools for job seekers and employers, including information on incentives, return on investment, recruitment, hiring and retention. The site also provides a number of Public Service Announcements and solicits promising practices that employers have used to achieve success in employing people with disabilities.

A related activity is Disability Mentoring Day which will be held on Wednesday, October 21. This unique opportunity promotes the economic empowerment of youth with disabilities by pairing them with a professional for a day on the job, giving them the opportunity to develop experience and a relationship with a mentor. Last year over 13,000 students and job seekers with disabilities from 24 countries came together for Disability Mentoring Day.

Please join us this October and get involved with the employment and economic empowerment of people with disabilities in California!
