Students Sought for Medical Transcription Course

05.17.08

The Lighthouse of San Francisco is seeking highly motivated blind and visually impaired students to participate in a 12-month, on-site medical transcription course that will prepare them for competitive employment as highly skilled, certified medical transcribers.

Students enrolled in this class will receive an intensive course of study that gives them the opportunity to excel. This class, developed and taught by the Lighthouse of Houston, has resulted in a 99% employment rate among graduates. The course goes beyond the mere fundamentals of transcription, and prepares students with a solid foundation in medical terminology and understanding of human anatomy and the human disease process. Other courses offer a basic framework, while the Houston model incorporates a knowledge base that will set these students apart from other prospective employees.

How It Works:
1. Students will be asked to attend class at the Lighthouse of San Francisco for 36 hours per week, Monday through Friday.
2. They will participate in daily, online lectures with their instructor.
3. They will work on assigned readings and exercises throughout the day.
4. They will be tested on all information at the end of each study unit, and monthly progress reports will be sent to rehabilitation counselors.

Requirements for Success:
• Superb word processing skills
• Excellent time management skills
• Typing speed of at least 45 words per minute
• Well-developed Internet research skills
• Above average English composition and grammar skills
• Highly developed JAWS or Zoom Text expertise
• Motivation and determination to succeed in a fast-paced environment

Prospective students will be evaluated extensively to determine whether they have the computing and grammar skills to succeed in this course. We are seeking students who are driven and intent on finding and retaining long-term employment in this highly competitive field.
