The LightHouse for the Blind and Visually Impaired and the San Francisco Arts Commission Gallery are proud to present the 19th annual Insights 2008 exhibition, with works by 44 artists who are blind or visually impaired. This year’s show is the largest to date, featuring 151 works of photography, painting, touchable sculpture, mixed media and more showing in the gallery’s “Art in City Hall” program.

Insights 2008 invites sighted, blind and visually impaired viewers alike to experience the artwork. Touchable sculpture, Braille and alternative format materials, as well as a full audio description including interviews with the artists offer multiple ways to engage the viewer in the art. Audio tours by Acoustiguide, Inc. and Guide by Cell.

Artist's Day

Artist's Day is a component of Insights focused on supporting the growth of visually impaired artists participating in LightHouse programs.

"Professional Development for Artists" - an informative presentation geared towards promoting artists’ careers, took place on Tuesday, October 21, 2008 and was broadcast as a live stream at that time.

  • The first presentation features Kari Orvik, photographer, former Insights Coordinator and LightHouse staff member. Providing high quality, representative images of your artwork is a key step to getting it into an art exhibition. Kari gives a brief outline on how to best photograph artwork for submission.
  • The second presentation is by Jonathan Wind, partner in the Paul Mahder Gallery, and a member of this year’s Insights Artist Advisory Board. He speaks to the interests and needs of galleries and discusses how they select works for display.
  • The third and final presentation is by Ketra Oberlander, former Insights artist and art marketing expert.
