Founded in 1902, San Francisco’s LightHouse for the Blind and Visually Impaired promotes the independence, equality and self-reliance of people who are blind or have low vision. We offer blindness skills training and relevant services such as access to employment, education, government, information, recreation, transportation and the environment. We also pursue the development of new technology, encourage innovation, and amplify the voices of blind individuals around the world.

JOB PURPOSE:

The LightHouse is seeking a Communications Intern to assist with production and maintenance of the LightHouse’s website, newsletters, social media, and overall agency outreach. This intern will work for the Communications team for 2-4 months, helping us to inform, engage and mobilize our local and global audiences as we expand our communications and media efforts. Our next internship begins in September 2017.

Applications for Summer 2018 are due May 8, 2018. Internship term is June-Sept 2018.

In addition to organizing our mailing lists and helping with written announcements, the internship may involve assisting with writing, social media, video, audio, or photo projects. Communications is a small, agile team where each individual is expected to think creatively, produce steadily, and be prepared to juggle deadlines.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education or equivalent: College degree in-process or recent graduate.

Experience: Demonstrated ability to write and tell stories; Good organization skills; Track record of social media use; Aptitude with email marketing and web publishing platforms; A background in blindness or a strong desire to research and learn this community.

Pluses: Obsessed with social media and its evolution; Previous work using MailChimp and/or WordPress; interest in accessibility and the disability community.

An ideal candidate *might* also:

  • Have a background in journalism, research or reporting
  • Have experience with email marketing campaigns
  • Be familiar with public relations / publicity
  • Know how to record and edit audio and/or video
  • Have a mind for creative advertising

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Able to sit at a desk and perform computer-intensive work for long periods of time; operate standard office equipment; move 20lbs independently.

ACCOUNTABILITIES:

The Communications Intern will be expected to work up to 30 hours per week for a semester/quarter or equivalent span of time (approx. 12 weeks) based on availability. The intern will work on any number of Communications tasks from writing, editing, updating calendars, sending newsletters, communicating with staff, and working towards improved systems for organizing and promoting the text, photos, video, and other assets that make up all LightHouse communications.

Interns will be given a good deal of freedom to pursue their interests within these areas and are expected to be motivated self-starters who have a passion for the mission of LightHouse, in addition to an interest in media.
